Ashburn is flot expec- ted to grow to more- than twice its current size by Town of Whitby plan- ning experts. The town*s planning department .has prepared a developrnent plan that lays out the municipality's planning policy towards the hamlet. According to director Bob Short while there is no current development proposais for the hamiet, any that do corne forward will have to meet the standards set down by the town. " There are no im- mediate pressures for development," Short says addinig, "The development plan sets out Our policy framework for planning and if there is growth, it will ensure there is no adverse affect on the community." The development plan, which was expec- ted to receive Whitby Town Council approval Monday night, sets out the policy by which coundil will consider any future develop- ment. There are currently 61 homes i the hamlet and Short does not expect that number to climb to more than 135 at any time in the future. Most of these existing and potential single family homes will be on ~large, unserviced lots. ~Future lots. will sit on one-half acre to one acre of land depending on soil conditions and drainage. 'Basically, what we 're looking at is a plan of development that will be compatible with the existing com- munity, " Short says. The main objet of the plan is to preserve Ash- burn's rural flavor. The director's plan calîs for the preser- vation of the Wilson House, a recognized heritage structure. The town will be prepared to look at a small com- mercial development if that is what it takes to preserve the house at some point in the future. Primary food ts available locally.
