And, everv third year, for the, re-, newal of their driver1s ,lic'- ences. In mosi cases, the Ontario Ministrv, of Transportation and Communications sends out a reminder that the 'val-- idation sticker is' comi ,ng due. But, a number of factors, including a recent change of address, can cause the reminder to go -astray. Stili, the onus is on the car own- ers to have their new stick- ers in place by their, birth- davs.. it's very simple. Owners go to the most convenient ,licence issuing.agent, pres- ent their ownership permits, proof of insurance and $4, pick up their stickers and place them on the upper right hand corner of the back plate. This can also be done bv mail, but requires a turn- around time of at le ast four weeks for the owner to re- ceive new validation stick- ers. A turn-around time of four to six wçeks is also re- quired for a driver's licence renewal which, unlike the validation sticker, is ALWAYS handled by mail. Renewals are sent out at leasi two months in ad- '~acand, ,if returned promptlv, drivers receive their lice'nce Iii advance of terbirthdav wvhich is the expiry date. Promptlv is the-key, word because, 1the . very J -arge n u mber of transacti ,ons that must be. handled -- more than three million a year - results in a minimum turn- around time of at least four weeks. In addition to the 1.7 million annlual driver's lic-, enerenewals, MTC staff also handles other trans- actions such as more than 240,000 new licences; 670,000 changes and corr- ections, 42,000 class of lic- ence changes; and 95,000 licence replacements. "This adds up to approx- imately 11,500 transactions each working day,"notes Bert Killian, manager of MTC's licensing operations office. "And we've been able to maintain our goal of a four week turn-around time on renewals,"# he added, "be- cause our emplovees aver- age some 200 transactions per d ay. " And even should drivers miss sending in th eir re-' newals promptlv enoôugh to, make the four-week mini- mum deadline. th ey can get their present, licence exi- ended for 90 days a! anv minîstry office.
