Classic cars continually on display at automotive museum WHITBY FREE PRESS AUTO GUIDE, WEDNESDAY JUNE 6, 1984, PAGE 13 Infrared remote co'ntrol Enter your own time machine as you step through the doors on the ground floor of the Canadian Automotive Museum and journey back in time. Say good- bye to the 1980's as you step. through the inner doors and begin your tour of the Million Dollar Antique & Classie Auto, a special attraction of the City of Oshawa. The displayed in: period atmosphere, ac- tually includes soixe 75 vehicles. Ap- proximately 50 are on display at any given time, with several being rotated in from storage regularly to give the freshappeal. The autos fail into three categories: an- tique, classies and special interest autos. Special interest autos are valued, not necessarily for age or design but for unuqueness. In the Canadian Automotive Museum are displayed automobiles which once belonged. to R.S. McLaughlin, E.R.S. McLaughlin, Mrs. Horace Dodge, Vincent Massey and B.J. Pilard of Detroit. Antiques are cared for in the Canadian Automotive Museum like works of art, which .theY indisputably are. Oldest autos are an 1867 McLaughlin Cutter, an 1898 Fischer Electric .(unrestored), a 1902 Orient and a 1903 Red- path. There are autos bearing proud old names like Ford, Pon- tiac, Buick, Cadillac and Roils Royce. Alongside them are some 'automotive od- dities that bear witness to the diversity of automotive design early in the century. Some 2,000 makes died'along the way to the Showroom, cars with names like Gaît, Cartercar, Reo and Amphicar. 'Some had viable design but lost their names in mergers and acquisition. Others had 50 little to recommend them they, cannot be more than footnotes to engineering history. - The "Waltham Orient" appears to be a forerunner of Soap Box Derby cars. Nicknamed the "Buckboard", its. body was no more than a seat on a wooden plat- form. The Orient had virtually no' springs on the presumption the wooden body was "Cush" enough for ail practical purposes. The model in the Canadian Automotive Museum was built in 1902, six years before Waltham merged with C.H. Metz. - The Orient's 1-cylinder engine was air-cooled., Also cooled by air in- stead of water was the 1909 Tudhope and the In- ternational Auto- 'Wagon. Their nickname "Hugli Wheelers" is quite obvious when you inspect these autos. Classica are valued for the beauty of their design and/or engineering break- throughs. Certain cars built in the 192's, '30's, '40's and even '50's are worth more now (in mint condition) than they were in the showrooms. Creamn of the Classic in the Canadian Automotive Museum is a 1927, 20 H.P. Roils Royce Continental Touring Saloon. The Rolls Royce name lias been revered as the standard of automotive excellence since 1906. This prestigious position is reinforced by the ability of this Roils Royce engine, when ad- justed to original fac- tory settings, to idie-at a consistent 79 R.P.M. The Cord, related to Duesenberg through Financier Erret Loban Cord was another line of classic autos. There is a 1936 Supercharged Cord Phaeton in the Canadian Automotive Museum. Among the dozens of other rarities are a 1931 Gardner Phaeton, a 1912 Rauch & Lang Electric, a 1953 Corvette and a Studebaker Avanti.
