Councl Column w Submitted by members of WHITBY TOWN COUNCIL By THE WORSHIPFUL MAYOR ROBERT A. ATTERSLEY The Corporation of the Town of Whitby Reviewing the opportunity to personally speak to the people of Whitby through this column, I once again recognize as the summer season approaches, the importance of "save our children through safety" projects which should be considered throughout this municipality. Schools will be closing for summer holidays and the increased number of youths enjoying the ac- tivites within their neighbourhoods and surrounding parks will be increasing dramatically. We en- courage neighbourhood watch programs and several other projects to protect our people and my only concern is that we not fail to consider the well being of the children especially within a fast pace society which has generated more accidents and additional injuries. Please exercise precaution in driving through our areas especially the residential and park vicinities - we need those children, they are the future of Whit- by. Also for the consideration of working mothers relocating to our area, I would like to mention we do have excellent day care facilities available within Whitby and the region. Perhaps for those not familiar with the quality of expertise offered at these respective centres, I will outline as follows: The Whitby Daycare Centre located at 501 Dunlop St. E.; Perry House Daycare Centre at 129 Perry St.; the Bimbo Day Nurseries at 293 Michael Blvd.; Kidsworld Centre, Highway No. 12, Brooklin; Fairy Glen Day Care Centre located at 900 Bonacord Ave.; Butterfly Day Care Centre at 309 Beech St. plus First Base Daycare sponsored by Pickering-Ajax Region Family YMCA and a num- ber of private home day care programs for infants under 2 years all of which could be a source of assistance for your employment situation and a great learning and sharing experience for the children. The Regional social service number for further information is576-0622 ext. 252 or feel free to contact our Whitby Community Information Centre 668-0552 for this or any data requirements on the services within this area. I would certainly like to compliment the Whitby Public Library staff for their co-ordination of such an excellent information centre offering the ultimate in service as "your answer place". I would also encourage our citizens to drop into the tourist centre at the corner of Burns and Brock Sts. in Whitby as we take pride in offering incorñing visitors the epitome of information on attractions and ways to spend their dollars in Whitby but beyond this element of service, the centre is also there to assist you - should you be travelling to other destinations. Over 15,000 b-ochures are housed within this well informed unit and.the staff are ready to meet'you with the home town hospitality we in Whitby have come to expect from our community minded people. I certainly take pride in our people and the ex- cellent compliments extended to you from the large number of delegations which tour our building. Within the past week, we have had people in from Prince Edward Island; England; Japan; New York and several other areas all extending gracious coinments about our beautiful community and its people - I sincerely thank you on behalf of council and ... for making my position as mayor one which I respect and take pleasure in extending my service whenever needed as do all your representatives. I trust you will ail have a beautiful surnmer and take time to enjoy our many programs and ac- tivities alive in this municipality such as the har- bor; Cull Gardens; the Lynde House Museum; the parks and playgrounds and trails as well as the many other areas open to you and your friends. You, the residents of Whitby are the ambassadors - let's show our visitors this summer how lucky we feel to have them stop and share in the quality shops we posses and the beautiful tourist attractions. Extend a warm welcome - a handshake or just a smile and keep them coming back. Tourism is a tremendous asset to the develop- ment of our economy - we need them and they deserve t, see Whitby - the Town we built as an example of Ontario and are real proud of it discoverin Ontario is not completed unless you have discovered Whitby! Have a safe and happy summer. THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT FROM THE BEAVERS, CUBS, SCOUTS AND VENTURERS OF WHITBY DISTRICT.
