The tyke Redmen came the closest as they even beat the eventual tyke wmnners during preliminary action. Red- men goals were three each by Wayne Primeau and Rohan Mehta, two by Derek Wright and one by -Donnie Wilkin- son. Spartan were han- ded their only defeat 4-7 by the Redmen as Primeau unleased seven goals. Goalie Jamie Hogel and Metha earned three assists each. The tykes were on a high as they beat Beaches 4-1 for the first time this year. Mehta and Primeau scored tow each. Etobicoke proved to be more diffîcult since the Redmen only managed three goals to Etobicoke's seven. Primeau had a pair and Mehta added one. Goal- averages saw Spartan edge out Whitby for en- try into the champion- ship game by .028 poin- ts. Spartan won the tyke title with a 5-3 game over Etobicoke. The WGR novice team got as far as the semi- finals. They lost first to Brampton No. 1 team 4- 10. Kelly Vipond had a hat trick with one goal by Anne Windover. Whitby novices came back with a 10-7 win over Orangeville. Shaydon Santos led with 3, 2 each by Steve Taylor and Vipond with others by Wmndover, Jonas Derks and Shawn Ferron. Jamie Glendin- ming earned 3 assists. The semifinal was a seesaw with Beaches finally winning by 8-7 over Whitby. Zach Hayden was a spark- plug with four assists and one goal. Derks and Windover had two each with singles by Andy Rennick and Vipond. Beaches went on to win the Novice Champion- ship 5-4 over Brampton. The WGR peewees sponsored by the Hideaway started slowly with a 9-13 loss to Mississauga. Chris Husted scored three, Chris Vanclief had three assists, pairs of goals by Alan Frank and Mat- thew Cook with singles by Garrett Camppbell and David Wood. They also started slow agamnst Spartan as they feUl behind 0-5. They came back for a 12-8 Win with 'five goals by Husted, three assists by -Frank, two goal each by ampelland Cook an snge by Jamie Smith, Chris Thompson and Rob Martin. The Hideaway bad a tough assignment i the semi-finals as they were matched Up with peewees from Owen Sound who have been completely undefeated this year. Cook and Campbell managed the only Whitby scores in their 2-12 loss. Owen Sound continued to be champs as they defeated Mississauga 14-2 in the finals. Rugby champions The Whitby Rugby Football Club is only four mponths old but it is already carving out a reputation for itself in the Ontario Rugby Union. Here, Regional Councillor Tom Edwards (centre), hiniseif a fan of the sport, is being shown the trophy that the local squad won in a recent invitational tournament in Montreal. To win the cup, the team had to beat teanis from Montreal; Rochester, New York; Belleville; and, Cornwall. Holding the trophy is team captain Domenic Squarciotta. His brother, Vince, is seen accepting a letter of congratulations froni the town on their win. Until they begin playing in league action next season, the Whitby side plays exhibition games and in invitational tournaments. This years Pay-as- you-pull tickets sold by Whitby Garrard Road Minor Lacrosse were drawn at 1 p.m. at Iroquois -Park Arena during the Whitby Op- timist lacrosse tour- nament. The winner of the 14 inch colour television was Allison Williamson of St. Catherines. Second prize was a 10 woman speed bicycle for Rick Carr of Shannon Crt., Whitby. Jimuny Brown won $100 cash third prize and J.A. Stagg of Scarborough won the $50 cash fourth prize. A special draw was also held at the same tume during the tour- nament for a foot tal ceramic lacrosse player figurine. Karen Orr won the rights to take it home to the Kew Beaches area. 901 SIMCOE ST.
