The nomination meeting will be held next Wednesday (July 25) at 8 p.m. at Pickering igh Schooi. To date, local Grits will have to choose between Durham Regional Chairmman Gary Herrema and downtown Whitby businesswoman Gwen Mowbray. In making bis official announcement last week, Herrema said the return of Prime Minister John Turner to lead the party partly prompted his decision to seat a seat in the House of Cummons. It was neyer a secret that Herrema was disenchanted with the leadership of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. However, more than this prompted bis decision to run. "This area has not been getting any shakes froni the feds for a long time," be said. "We, want some things and we haven't been getting anything." Herrema said that he is after three major things: a final resolution to the now defunct Pickering Air- port problem; a re- Introduction of, the federal government's program to dlean Up the Great Lakes; and a new program to heip revitalize the downtown cores in the riding's four municipalities. In fact, Herrema, who has held Durham's top political job for four years, took a French course last winter in an- ticipation of the up- coming election.. Early this year he bas said that he would not seek the local Liberal not because of a few personal problems. These problems have now resolved, he said, noting that his family is 100 per cent behind bis decision. He also said that he would stay on as regional chairman during the campaign, although be willhave to resign should he defeat incumbent Progressive Conservative MI> Scott- Fenneil. Herrema also says he wants to ses more government aid to small business and a moderation of interest rates. "'I've always -wanted to go to Ottawa," the 46- year old politician said. The other declared candidate for the nomination is Gwen Mowbray, ýa resident of Pickering and the owner of the Readers' Choice in downtown Whitby. Mowbray too, decided to run on the strength of John Turner's leader- ship pointing out that he bas already said he wants to see more women in Parliament. "ïi understand Mr. Turner would like to see more women in Parliament," the 57- year old businesswoman said. "And I feel I have a good cbance of win- ning."y In preparation for ber bid for the nomination, Mowbray has resigned as executive vice- president of the Ontario Riding Liberal Association. She said the issues confronting the riding are primarily economic. National concerns sucb as jobs and interest rates are also feit bere. Mowbray aiso bas some criticism of Fen- neil. "I feel he basn't been bighly visible in the riding."' He said recently that business considerations may prevent bimn from reseeking the local nomination. Campaign office opens The Ontario Riding election campaign got off to an officiai start Iast Saturday when incumbent Progressive- Conservative MP Scott Fenneil officially opened bis Whitby canipaign headquarters on Dundas St. W. in the downtown core. Looking on as Fenneil (with scissors) does the honors are his wife, Ceeil, campaign manager Jerry Moskaluk and Alex Sosna, the P.C. candidate in Oshawa. Fenneli told 40 of the local party faithful that during this campaign he will "get rid of the Liberals and the NDP from this riding once and for ail."
