Over the course of the last several months, the Pickering Ajax Whiitby Animal Control Com- mittee (P.A.W.) has been attempting to write a bylaw that wiil meet the needs of ail three municipalities. While the proposed bylaw has already been written, the Town of Ajax has expressed concern over soine of its wording and is flot wiiling a press-ahead with it until after they hold a public meeting on the matter July 31. P.A.W. committee chairman, Councillor itoss Batten of Whitby, said that neither his municipality nor Pickering had any problems and wanted to get the matter dealt with. 'II would like to deal with it in September," Batten said noting that the delay caused by Ajax would put off any P.A.W. decision until its next meeting in Oc- tober. The measure is designed to prohibit the keeping of exotic animais (such as ferrets, snakes, and large cats) by unqualified people. Batten said that he hopes Whitby Town Council will iznplement the new bylaw in Sep- tember. He added that if the Ajax public meeting brought forward any new, valuable recom- mendations then they could always be incor- porated into the Whitby bylaw at a later date.
