Whitby has many talented people includlng Carol Gabourle Cooper. I have written about her in the past and I amn sure many of us have seen her work at local gaileries and in Toronto. Her paintings 0f ten depict children and the main thrust of her work 18 for and 0f children. Carol has illustrated and written children's books which are a jA-singular honor has been bestowed on Carol with the comning of the Pope. She was cormjssioned to do a painting for a presentation to Pope John Paul Il by the youth committee of the Archdiocese of Toronto. This painting represents a spiritual committment 0f prayers and good works. A lovely thing to see this painting is a water colour showing the Pope's head and shoulders with bl'é' hands outstretched symbolizing his love for children. The children on either side of hlm represent different nationalities, ten in aIl, five on either side, a multicultural mosaic of Canadian youth. The heads of the children are surrounded by flowers, especially forget-me-nots, the maple leaves and the trilliumn. Gold cailigraphy depicting the eleven spiritual commitments forms the main body of the painting. A dove representing the Holy Spirit and peace spreads it's wings above the Pope's head surroun- ded by rays of golden light which shines on his han- ds. At the bottom of the painting is a gold cross and Canadian autumn leaves. This will be presented to the Pope on September 14 at the Papal Mass by a student and then taken to .the Vatican in Rome. At some time in the near future 1 hope The Whitby Free Press might print this picture in"colour on the front page. How often do we have a Whitby resident take part in this type of thing? As Protestants, I and my husband have enjoyed looking at it very much, especially the dear little faces of those chlldren, a speciality of Carol's. To al of us who know Carol we are delighted to know you have been given this honor. 1Ail Summner Suifs, Shorts, Slacks, T-Shirts & Dresses '/2 PRICE Also a wîde variety of Blouses, Sweaters & Sklrts r, 44~ 4444k 4.. ~444~4~4444~4j44'4~4~44&44~ 4*4*4444*~44 .<*.%4~*4444.44~ 4444 ~ 44~44~ .4~4.444 ~ ,~v.;. ~M~4"~4' ;4~4~~44.~. .~4~44 S4.4~>.444 .4.. 444~.4.~* ~44 4~44.44 4~4~ 444~~44~*44444**~ ~ . 44~<444.4.44 4~444..4 4~ .444 4444444444444~ ..444 .*4*4~4 .4.;~.4~44~4 i ~ 4~4444.4~44~.~4.4.44444~4 4444 .444 44444f4444~.44. ..'.~.~.44444444 4444~7~.~44~ :44.?V4' 444., ~ y4. **44~4444444. 444444444y44~444. -~ ~ 4 ~.4.4.444.~44 .~ ' 4444 4.. .444 $~ .4.44.44.4 . ««44>4 ~ ~ 4.. 4. 4~~444444>. "dA conservative government would ackniowledge the impor- tance of the Great Lakes - one of our finest natural resources,"t Fenneil told the Free Press in a brief inter- view last week. He was also critical 0f the Liberal gover- nznent's decision to discontinue the funding of d*cean-up projects along the Great Lakes and promised his party would re-infroduce them if they win the Sept. 4 federal election. "We xWi be in- troducing programns to reduce aci d ramn and to dleanî up the Great Lakes.'5 Fennell said that it s18 not only fish that are succumbing to the af- fects of acid-rain. Trees and other natural vegetation are also being killed by this kind of pollution. A conservative government would also work more dloser with the American gover- nment in an effort to combat the problem. "Canada has only talked about. it, it has neyer really done anything about acid rain,'" Fennell said, "The Americans are already starting to move on the problemn. 1 Despite" the need for industrial development and new job creation, Fenneil sees no reason why it cannot be ac- complisheri without en- dangering the environ. ment.
