Katima A group of Katimavik participants from across Canada have moved to the Whitby- Oshawa area to begin work on a number of assigrnents proposed by these communities. 'Projects which would otherwise not get done will be undertaken and completed thanks to Katimavik's volunteer labor." Work in Whitby will involve both physical and service labor in the parka division. Jobs in the parks will include completion of a fitness trail in D'Hilier Park, tree identification and labelling, the rein- stallation of a fitness trail in the Blue Meadows subdivision, general maintenance and upgrading of town property. These young people will be under the jurisdiction of the supervisor of parka. DeVeau said that work teams wiil vary in numbers fromn three to five members at any given time. In Whitby, thçre will be six persons working for a three month period followed by four for a second three month period and two in the last three montb period totalling nitie months 0f work to the community. At least 5,000 participants are expec- ted to take part in Katimavik projecta this year alone witb Ontario bosting about one-tbird 0f these. Eacb group travels to three dif- ferent parts of Canada (including, one fran- copbone community) for 3 tbree montb stays. Participants are paid $1 a day in pocket money, but are entitled to a $1,000 bonorarium once they complete the program. AIl travel and accommodation costs are borne by Katimavik. .Tbe program bas four objectives: provide volunteer service to Canadian communities; promote' participants personal development and well being; en- courage concern for the. environment and ap- propriate tecbnology; and, foster understan- ding of Canada and Canadians through ex- tensive travel. Deirdre Hilary, the projeet co-ordinator for Katimavik in this area bas indicated that'there are other projeets being conducted at the same time. The first is that of a women 's hostel, Project Auberge, which willI be starting in Sep- tember and located in Oshawa. Participants will also be working at the Central Lake On- tario Co nservation Autbority, in an ad- ditional project and will be completing tasks similar to that of the parks division in the Town of Whitby.
