WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 22, 1984, PAGE 7 Between You and Me By RUTII COLES Everything diepends on wbat the people are capable of wanting. Enrico Malatesta We are moving closer and closer to election day. What are you doing to prepare yourself to make your ballot count? No doubt a great deal of information is picked up through watching TV or reading the papers. Does this give you a true picture of things as they are? Hardly. Words, paragraphs and sentences are often taken out of context. This can be dangerous and of- ten changes the whole picture. Get into the action; introduce yourself to the can- didate of your choice or to al other candidates. Have eye to eye contact with this person. Most im- portant because it can say more than a thousand words. Is he or she looking beyond you to find someone who might be more important? Running for office means different things to dif- ferent people and at best is not an easy task. For one thing those cameras and mies are such a threat. Why someone isn't smashed in the mouth is beyond me. To walk admist all this gear is a feat which many could not face up to; a dangerous and nerve racking adventure. We enjoyed the luncheon for John Turner last week. To listen to his words without any deletions or nothing taken out of context is a delight. A thoroughly honest and straight forward man and this comes across loud and clear when you meet him in person. He doesn't pander to the press nor is he full of balarney nor does he give promises which he cannot keep. The sky is not the limit when it comes to all these promises. If we get into more social giveaways we will run our country into the ground. The rich have always cared for the poor in many ways from doc- tors in the past giving time without renumeration to many thousands of people who went to clinics. A certain number of hours were donated every week, week in and week out, year after year. What about the thousands of housewives who gave their time to volunteer work. Most of it gone by the wayside to be supplemented by government handouts paid for by our mones. What about our peaches rotting on the trees or the strawberries which rotted in the strawberry pat- ches? Sinful to put it mildly; "waste not, want not". We are living in a land of milk and honey which gives us responsibilities. Great responsibility and we dare not fall by the roadside. We cannot make demands on the system without paying a heavy price. To have to import workers from other coun- tries and all that entails is a disgrace and shame. Our country is full of able bodied, healthy people who would benefit themselves as well as the economy. Beware of false promises. They are easy to give even though the givers may be fully aware that they will never ever have to come across. If most people focused in on asking what they can do for their coun- try we might become great. The woman's movement scares me to death. Are they going to become like the unions who control so much of our economy? The demands for day care and who will pay the price? Many women work because they want to be out in the work force. We understand many women must work and that la a very different story. There were creches in the 1930's to care for this type of thing with a great deal of care and thought given by many including my mother. There were snags to overcome as always happens. One was the giving of free milk tickets to make sure the little ones were taken care of with enough milk to drink. What was the end result? Often the bartering or seling of milk tickets to buy beer and cigarettes. The practice had to stop which meant the honest had to suffer too. At the present time we need to very carefully think about the election, don't just leave it to a few. Get into the action and make your own judgements. Don't just sit and read about what's going on; make your own judgemnents because you are involved. EXPLANATORY NOTE The Ontario Ministry of the Environment plans to introduce proposais to regulate the operation and siting of mobile, poly- chlorinated biphenyl (PCB) destruction facilities. PCBs are a class of synthetic organic chemicals that do not decompose easily and which accumulate in living organisms. There is a growing inventory of these wastes in storage because there are no currently approved destruction facilities in Canada. Mobile destruction facilities may be brought to any Ontario community to destroy PCB wastes without further hearings if the proposed regulatory and administrative program is adopted. The regulatory proposais set out the requirements under which mobile PCB destruction facilities will be permitted to locate and operate in communities in Ontario. If the proposed regulatory program is adopted, it would still be necessary for the proponent of a mobile PCB destruction facility to make application to the Ministry of the Environment for a Certificate of Approval. If the Ministry should find that the propo- nent meets the requirements of the regulatory program, a Certifi- cate of Approval would be issued without a public hearing. DATED at TORONTO this 2nd day of August, 1984. 1 J Ministry of the Environment Ontario
