Six leaks have occured in thelast two months alone, he added. Corrosion in the pipe has produced 'many holes the size of a quar- ter. A hole this size resuits in a sudden loss of pressure which not only resuits in a lack of water for the sub- division's 90 or so residents but poses a further hazard in case of fire. In his report, works commissioner Bull Twelvetrees notes that the main pipe which cornes south from Dun- das St. W. is the only supply of water. Every time repairs are necessary "the main must be shut down with the resuit that the residents are left without' water for the period of the repair. " The last shut down oc- cured on Sept. 27. Twelvetrees said that " corrosive soul con- ditions" are responsible for the problem. "It is obvious that the condition is worsening. The recommended ac- tion will, we hope, eliminate major problems which occur over the upcoming win- ter months, " he added. Emm* said that the money for the repairs wiIl be found from sur- pluses from other projects. Twelvetrees said that the current 1984 works budget has a surplus of about $300,000. Council is also to be asked to waive the usual tendering .procedure. Emm said that in order té get the work done before the harsh winter weather sets in, the committee was to invite several firms it curren- tly deals with to bld on the project. The work, he added, must begin during the first week of November if it is to be completed before the second week of December, the cut-off point for such projects. "We want to get it done this fail," Emm said, "If we don't we'l have to wait 'tii spring, meaning we'11 have to deal with problems al winter."' Emm noted that the homes were built in the The minister added that it-is also a coming together of the local church and the town in a demonstration of unity and an expression of common concern. Gee, who is secretary of the W.M.A., says that Mayor Bob Attersley has been extremely supportive of the break- fast and most helpful in helping arrange it. ý' The ministerial association is expecting between 200 and 300 people for the breakfast and Gee says that if this one is successful, then others may be held but no decision on that has yet been made. Whitby's church community already en- joys a strong sense of togetherness, he added saying that an activity such as this can only make things better. "There's a very fine ecumenical spirit. in town and thîs is going to help that, " Gee says. The pipe installed was supposed to last for between 50 and 60 years. Regional council will also be asked to include an additional $635,000 in the 1985 budget, to com- plete the replacement of the iron pipe with a rust resistant plastic pipe. These pipes, Emm noted, are more cost ef- fective for this area because they do not need as much main- tainence.
