Nominations for the Liberal party candidacy closed last Thursday without an interest being expressed. The meeting to choose the, officiaI nominee was to be held tomorrow. However, it is doubtful there will be a meeting unless someone steps forward. 1Judi , 'Longfield, executive vice- president of the Durham West Riding Association, apparently had no alternatives and wasn't quite sure what the party will do. The constitution governing party organization gives no direction to local associations unable to find a standard bearer. It does say that the 168 hours between the opening of nominations and the closing date can be waived if it is in the best interesta of the par- ty and the riding. If there are still no nominees before tomorrow's meeting, nominations can be taken from the floor. Longfield said that the party did have an ex- cellent potential can- didate but he is hoping he won't *have to run. "We came to an un- derstanding that for a variety of reasons the two operations were not ail that compatible and that for the forseeable future we wouid follow separate paths."Y Anderson also went on to severely criticize Whitby Town Coundil saying their biggest failure "has been their incredlibly paternalistic manner of dealing with the society and the museum. "The town has con- sistently, refused to discuss the future of Lynde House with the people who have kept it running for the Iast 12 years," he added. To ignor them is "an act of unbelievable -arrogan- ce."y He' said he has put 3,000 to 4,000« hours in working for the museum oVer the past few years and has built up a bat- tery of contacts which could have made the Statement of Goals and Objectives a reality. "But for Iack of any encouragment from the town ail this' has been for naught," Anderson said. "Town council has allowed itself to become incredibly isolated from the community it is sup- posed to serve. "Instead of co- operating, with com- mnunity groupe and in- dividuals, it has become secretive and confron- tational." He also accused coun- cil of ignoring outside comments. "Any input from commumity groups, taxpayer groups or in- dividuals is viewed suspiciously at best and generally ignored."'
