Wednesdays wiil not receive service on Dec. 25,26,31 and Jan. 1. Ail of these dates are holidays for municipal employees. Whitby Town Council approved the holiday schedule at its meeting last wveek rather than spend an additional $6,000 to pick-up the Monday and Tuesday garbage later in the weeks affected. Garbage that is nor- mally collected Dec. 25. and 26 will not be picked up until Jan. 2. There is no garbage collection in the Town of Whitby on Mondays. That day is set aside for equipment maintenance. In bis report to, coun- cil, Dick Kuwahara, director of public works, said: "With our present staff we could not pick up the Tuesday and Wednesday collection on Thursday and Friday without hiring ad- ditional men and equipment and in the event there is also a snow storm it would be just about impossible to complete." However, even with - the reduced schedule, not ail of the garbage will be picked up. "Even with this reduced schedule we may have difficulty in completing ail the pick ups within the regular working day because of the anticipated Ioads as well as any possible weather problems," Kuwahara said. The commercial areas 0f- toêwn, which receive service on Wed- nesdays and Fridays, will only have one pick- up during the Christmnas week on Friday, Dec. 28. The following week, the commercial areas will receive their usual level of service. Kuwahara doesn't believe that the exten- ded perlod of no service will greatly affect local homeowners. "This extended period should not affect the homeowner greatly sin- ce the weather is cold and should not cause undue problems with odor, etc.," the director said. The town didn't have this problem last year because both the Christmas Day and New Year's Day holiday feU on the weekend. "With the four, day schedule of plck-ups we were able to accom- THE WAY YOU WA NT ITI DIAL FOR A BOTTLE Beer, Wine & Liquor Delivery Service Haif Hour Delivery Service e Radio Dispatched Company a Hours 9:30 a.m.-1 1 p.m. -CHARGES- modate the other holldays with a double pick-up," Kuwahara said. The director added that ail residents affec- ted by the decision will be notlfied throughout advertisements placed in local newspapers.
