A spokesman for the force said that thieves broke into the I.G.A. store on Baldwin St. by forcing open a door on the west side of the building. After entering, the cash registers were rifled and a small llghtý box was broken into. They also tried to enter the store's heavy safe with an acetyline torch but without success. 1Police said that the thieves took ap- proximately $4,000 in cash. The heavy safe and the light box were totally destroyed and considerable damage was also done to the cash registers. Sometime during the same period, a break-in occured at Hooker Motors, also on Baldwin St. While nothing was taken, police said that the 'place was ran- sacked. Police are also looking into a break-in at DeVille Produce oit Hwy. 12 juat north of Rossland Rd. Thieves broke in tbrough a win- dow at the rear of the store. They rifled througb the cash registers and the manager's desk stealing approximately $500. Police estimated the thieves did about $500 damnage into that break- in. Both staff and politicians from the Town of Whitby heard the cal of duty and may even have found a new career in the fast food industry if they should ever find themselves out of work. Leading the parade last Wednesday lunchtime was Fire Chief Ed Crouch (top photo) who boxed those littie suekers so they would be ready for delivery. Giving him a helping hand by griling those "Big Macs" were (second photo) treasurer AI Claringbold, parks and recreation director Wayne DeVeau and administrator Bill Wallace. And what is a "Big Mac" without fries? Manning the fry station (in the bottom photo) is North Ward Coun. Ross Batten, who bas now become an expert on making french fries. A host of other Whitby celebrities including CFTO-TV news anchorman Tom Gîbney, Coun. Marcel Bruneil and Durham West MPP George Ashe took their turns serving the public for Ronald McDonald House. Over the past four years, McDonalds has raised some $2.5 million by giving $1 from every "Big Mac" sold on McHappy Day. The Thickson Rd. S. outlet raises money for the Ronald McDonald House at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.
