WHITBY FREE PRESS- WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14,1984, PAGE 17 e CRRASHSIH!11Crun- ch. Twisted metal. Broken bones. Screams. "I can't move...oh, my Godl P I;eing injured in a car accident is always a trauniatic experience, especially if the injuries are permanent.' At least a generous court set- tiement is a comnforting compensation. Or is it? What if the driver at faùlt carnies only the minimnum $100,000 third pary llability - the part of the car insurance that covers such accidents? What 'if the judge has awarded you $400,000, but the other motorist's insurance wiJl only pay you $100,000? What if thatmotorist then has to «Hi bis mortgaged* bouse ini order to pay you another $40,000? That still leaves you $M0,000 short, possibly wlthout any hope of ever colectlng another pen- DY. With dramnatically rislng medical, auto The job of the car- buretor air filter is to clean . the enormous amounts Of air used by the engine. It must fiter out foreign matter which might otherwise get intothe engine and cause wear., Most late Model cars and llght trucks use the replaceable dry paper filter elements. Remove the fastener (wlng nut, boit. or clamp) located on the top of the air cleaner assembly. Remove the cover and pull the filter out. To rlean, hold the filter by the rim and tap it severaI times on a firm surface. To determine if the filter needs to be replaced, hold it so light from a flashlight shows through from the inside outwards. Turn the filter or move the repair, auto replacement and loss of income costs, courts are awarding ever higher settiements. But not being able to collect such Judgments only adds insuit to the ac- cident victim's injuries. One solution Finally, however, there is a solution. It's called the Underinsured Motorist Endorsement, and Ontario is the first province in Canada to im plement it. For a small, extra premium, your own in- surance company will pay you the difference between your judgment and the liability in- surance limit carried by the motorist at fault, Up to your own liabity insurance limit. To use the previous example: If you had a liability insurance limit of $500,00, your own mn- surance company would pay you the missing $300,000 - the différence flashlight to shine light through each section of the filter. If- light does not pass through the filter, it must be replaced. Rfeplace the filter i the air cleaner and reinstail the cover and fasteners. between the other motorist's limit of $100,000 and the judgment 0f $400,000. If your own liability in- surance limit is $200,000, however, then your own insurance company would pay you only $100,000. In other words, the higher your liability insurance limit, the bet- ter your chance of oh- taining a complete set- tiement. Family protected In most instances, your automobile, in- surance policy covers you, your spouse and your dependents if in- jured i a car accident - whether you are injured while in your car, in another car or as a pedestrain. The Un- derinsured Motorist Endorsement will apply i similar circumstan- ces. This endorsement does not apply, however, if: *you or your family are injured in a car which, although owned by you, does not have the Underinsured Motorist Endorsement; or *your spouse or dependents are injured in their own cars for which they did not pur- chase this endorsement. Other occupants of your car who become in- jured while riding in your car will only get the left-over amount of the settlement once you and/or your family members have received your settlement. In other words, you and your family members wil always have priority of payment over other occupants of your car in case of an accident. If every registered car owner in Ontario carried the Underin- sured Motorist Endor- sement for each car, and if ail car--owners carried a higher-than- minimum third party liability insurance, most of the financial burden resulting from car ac- cidents could be eliminated. Ask your insurance agent about the rates for the Underinsured Motorist Endorsement and higher minimum third party liability coverage. Proteet your- self to the same extent that you have chosen to protect others. Just a few extra dollars per year will assure peace of mind and financial security in case of an accident. rriZieart L 'Ziebart nVjSieah %ePaint Protection Sis Guards Zlebart wants 10 pratot your car tram rustlng, fading, statning end chlpping.
