According to hkl iuf- fett, chairman of the Downtown Im- provement Area Board, merchants in the core are working feverishly ta prepare for the up- coming holiday season in an effort ta prove that downtown is more than just a place ta shop but gives a sense of identity ta the community. The theme for the three week promotion will be "Christmas - A Time for Children" and ail the events will be geared towards them. Buffett said that in conjuction with the two boards of education, several local classes of school children will each be assigned a store that they will decorate with their own artwork. Each class will try ta make its art applicable ta the business. "The children, we hope, will bring their parents to'see their ar- twork," Buffett says, "It's a great way ta in- traduce people ta the downtown area."1 And what would Christmas be without Santa Claus. The entire event will be kicked off on Dec. 6 at 7:,30 p.m. when a Christmas tree decorating party will be held in front of the Whitby Public Library. The Whitby Brass Band will be an hand as will be a chair from one of Whitby's public schools. Hot chocolate and coffee will be ser- ved, compliments af the downtown board. Also at the Santa Claus location wiil be a display of Christmas art by students at Whitby's two high schools. Hot malt cider will be ser- ved ta prevent winter chills. Buffett said that this event 15 being planned s0 that an even bigger and better promotion p.m. ta gee if local youngsters have been good this year. Buffett said that no location has been found for S. Nick's temporary home but hie hopes ta find, it in the next few days. Those children that climb up on Santa's knee will receive a free picture, caurtesy of the dawntown board. While Santa's elf will be assisting him each Saturday, she will also raam the downtown core each Thursday and Friday evening throughout the promotion (Dec. 6, 7, 14, 15, 21 and 22) from 4 ta 7 p.m. distributing candy canes ta, the youngsters and encauraging them ta came and pay the grand aId man a visit. There will also be a Christmas gift wrap- ping booth at Santa's home where presents can be bundled for a nominal fee. Buffett says that a portion of these proceeds will be used ta "make some kind of meaningful gesture ta the boards of education for their assistance."~ Christmas music will alsa filI the air in the downtown core each Thursday and Friday during the event. One of the big items in the event is a draw for a Cabbage Patch doîl that will be held each week. Buffett.says that anyone who spends $10 in a downtown store during the promotion will receive a ballott for a daîl which will be given away each week. The board is also hoping ta be able ta, provide free daycare services on each Satur- day before Christmas beginning Dec. 8. However, Buffett says that they want ta locate it samewhere where it won 't interfere with parking. It seems that Christ- mas will reaily be a time for children in downtown Whitby this Winter Agricrew is a Pilot prajet situated in sauth western and sauth central Ontario. The program is ad- ministered by the On- tario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, and funded by the On- tario Youth Secritariate. 1 The pragram is direc- ted towards young people age 15 to 24 years. These youths have been unemplayed for at least 12 weeks and have a grade il education or less. Agricrew will provide the youths with a variety of challenging work opportunities and Most important of al work experience. Possible jobs for Agricrew include, general dlean up, pruning, animal care, snow removal and mast any ather jobs that far- mers need help doing. Winter Agricrew wil start Nov. 19 and finish March 15, 1985. There will be two and four man crews available for wark. The cast for a two man crew is $50 per day and $90 per day for a four man crew.
