In December, we also reported that since 1978, Durham Board of Education taxes have climbed 1271/ per cent. During the same period Region of Durham taxes climbed 91.9 per cent while Town of Whitby taxes jumped 91.5 per cent. The most important announceinent was made by Whitby Town Council, which because of Whitby's 5.7 per cent growth rate, could forgo raising taxes for local purposed in 1985. This means that the local tax rate wili remain unchanged from 1984 despite the fact that the town will not cut back-or eliminate any of its programs next year. Council also started the process that will see $4.3 million in renovations made to the Iroquois Park Complex beginning in 1986. During the next year, council will be holding a series of public meetings to hear from individuals and groups about the recreation needs of the town. Whitby Chamber of says in Commerce named Bey and Don Rogers of Signet Signs as the win- ners of the Business Person of the Year Award for 1984. The chamber also nanied Katherine Dobranowski of Garrard Rd. N. as its Student of the Year for 1984. Dobranowski is currently' studying at Carlton University and also works as a page in the House of Commons. Whitby Town Council is also studying im- plementing a recycling program in1 the West Lynde area next year. The programn would separate at source such items as newspapers, glass and metal cans.
