January marred by $800,000 fire at Kurz Foods There has been a lot of news in Whitby during 1984, and the staff of the Free Press have been pressed for time to cover it ail. Things got off to a start in January when Canadian Pacific Railways had to bring a 250-ton crane to Whitby to replace three, 42-foot long spans of a railway bridge over the Lynde Creek. The 35-man crew completed the job in 11- Charlie finds the people at Dickson Printing & Office Su plies ust as refreshi las lUT0e pool. The Whitby Psychiatrie Hospital also came under fire last Jariuary after John Vazan, a 49-year old ,oluntary patient wan- dered off the grounds on Dec. 22, 1983. After he was found the following day, he lost both hands and feet to frostbite. A"- ter the incident, Van- zan's brother, William. charged that the hospital either acte negligently in the sear ch or a fault existed iin the system. The issue is still confronting hospital figures since it appears the family will file suit. The Dr. J.O. Ruddy General Hospital an- nounced Jan. 5 that Jim R. Miller, 51 had been appointed to succeed John Kunetsky as hospital administrator. Prior to taking up his new post on March 5, Miller had been ad- ministrator of the Charlotte Eleanor PRO DODGE Your Local Chrysler-Dodge Sales and Service Dealer Parts & Service - Thursdays till 9 p.m. WH ITBY 209 Dundas St. W. 666-3000 Englehart Hospital in Petrolia, Ont. We also reported that Whitby Town Council finalized its 1984 budget that resulted in a tax in- crease of under two per cent which translated into a jump of $7.50 for the average Whitby homeowner. The evening of Jan. 12 was a tragie one for a long time commercial establishment in Myrtle Station. The Kurz Foods Inc. food processing plant was destroyed in a fire that caused over $800,000 damage. The fire broke out at about 5 p.m. in the ceiling near the compressor area and it took 25 members of the Whitby Fire Department until 2 a.m. to put out the blaze. WANT TOAPPEAL- YOUR ASSESSMENT? You still have time to appeal your 1984 assessment if you feel your home or business property has been improperly assessed. Your assessment is important because the amount of property tax you pay depends on it, in that the assessed value of your property is multiplied by your municipal and school mill rate to determine your 1985 property taxes. Notices of Assessment have been mailed to property owners and tenants whose assessments have changed since last year. Open houses have been held in your area to answer questions and amend assessment information if necessary. Open house dates and locations were announced in a previous advertisement. The Assessment Roll has now been delivered to your municipal- ity for the purposes of calculating the amount of taxes you must pay on your property in 1985. For information on your assess- ment, the Assessment Roll is now available for review at your Municipal Office during regular business hours. If you feel your property has been improperly assessed, and you have not yet made your appeal known, you still have until January 8, 1985 to deliver or mail an appeal to the Assessment Review Board. And remember, even if you did not receive a Notice of Assessment, you stili have the right to appeal. Appeal deadline-January 8, 1985 The Assessment Review Board is an impartial body reporting to the Attorney General of Ontario, which provides you with an additional opportunity to have your assessment reviewed if, in your opinion, it is not fair and equitable with similar properties in your area. The Review Board is more informal and relaxed than a regular court of law. You may present your own case, retain a lawyer or ask a relative or friend to speak as your agent. To help you in filing your appeal, Notice of Appeal forms are available from the Assessment Review Board, your Regional Assessment Office or your Municipal Office. As well, you can use the reverse side of a Notice of Assessment or write a letter stating the property address and roll number, together with your reasons for appealing. Appeals should be forwarded to the Regional Reg- istrar of the Assessment Review Board listed below.
