PAGE 14, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 9. 1985, WHITBV FREE PRESS But needs town grant this year Chamber wants to be self sufficient: President says It is the aimn of the Whitby Chamber of Commerce to become financially self- sufficient according to its president, Don Frise. Frise made the com- ment last week in reac- tion to a previous decision by Whitby Town Council to poat- pone giving the cham- ber a grant of $2,100 to help defray its operating costs in 1985. Council made the decision during last montha budget deliberations because the financial infor- mation submitted to them by the chamber wasn't complete. Treasurer AI Claringbold told council that the chamber's financial statement showed it would have a surplus of $8,592.70 at the end of 1984. However this figure wasn't shown as revenue in the 1985 proposed budget which sought a town grant of $2,100. According to Frise, the chamber will, in- deed, have the surplus at the end of 1984 but noted that moat of that money la committed to varlous projects being undertaken by the group. The president said that $2,000 of the money is held in trust to operate the 1985 Marigold Festival. Haîf of this money belonga to the town and will be returned if the festival la not held. Frise also said that $1,800 of the money is allocated for the repair of a sign at Cullen Gar- dens. However, the sign has already been repaired and the money may be used for other purposes. "It seema, we did have a bit of surplus in '84," Frise adxitted ad- ding that the 1985 budget 419HEY BRAR BARY-EARPE EENTRE (Goverment Lcensed / Government App roved) NURSERY SCHOOL For Children 2 to 5 Years OId NOW OPEN 6:30a.m. - 6 p.m. Monday thru Friday ail year, except Canadian Statutory Holidays We provide a Full Day, Half Day and Hourly Program wlth an abundance of safe new toys and equipment for fun and earning. "AlI1 showed was a break-even budget for 1985," he added saying that the chamber is trying to tighten its <mnandiai beit because increasing expenses are going to erode any sur- plus the chamber may earn. This means that the chamber is going to have to attract new members and under- take new fund raising activities to keep going. "We've always been low key on member- ship," Frise explains, "Mayhe this would be a good year to get out and talk to people about membership." The Whitby chamber currently has about 170 members and Frise would like to see more local businesses join. "We would like to represent a larger per- centage of the businesses [n the town," he said. Frise said that the chamber, not only locally but provincially and nationally as well, has been active in demand for fiscal ac- countability and responsibility. And because of that, the local group wants to become seif-sufficient. "Hopefully, in the future, the amount we ask for will get smaller," Frise said adding that he aiso hopes council will con- tinue to fund them until that goal is reached. The chamber and council have always worked well together in the past, he continued. "There has been a good spirit of co-operation (between us) and we hope it will continue." A decision on whether or not the town will grant the chamber the $2,100 it requested ls ex- pected shortly. also said that the cham- ber la actually seeking less money for the town than it did four or five years ago. [n 1980, the chamber asked for and received a grant of $2,500 - this year they are asking for $2,100. "Actuaily we're asking for less money than we did four or five years ago. " The chamber uses the money it raises, not only from the town but from other sources as well, to hoat such events as the annual Peter Perry Award, to hose the student, business and corporate citizen of the year award, and to, put a float [n the annual Santa Claus Parade. The chamber also worked to provide to local business on a wide range of issues and represented local business* before local levels of government. The chamber's office in the Centennial Building also responded to numerous inquiries made by the general public. Operating the Whitby Chamber of Commerce will cost just over YOU KNOW? ýMCARE LTD. Lets just have a few predictions for the coming year. There wili be a municipal election. That much is for sure. Who will toss their hats in the ring for the four Whit- by and two Regional positions? Mayor Bob Atter- siey wiil undoubtedly run again, but not necessarily for mayor. Set your sights a littie higher Bob, it doesn't matter what party, pick the one you can win and neyer look back. That leaves a vacancy for the Mayor's chair. It wili be hotly contested with at Ieast four candidates trying for the position. Who will they be? , weil Joe Bugelli, Gerry Emm, Joe Drumm and Jim Gartshore, and that leaves a position on region, east ward and west ward. Ross .Batten will either' leave politics or stay on as north ward councillor and Marcel Brunelle will likeiy 1make a bid for the centre ward again.- So there you have it folks, the November election will take place in November and there could be a whole new look ir the Whitby Council chambers, <or it could be exac- tly the same as it is right now), don't hold your breath. The past three years have been' good for Whitby, and most of the credit goes to the present council. Happy New Year.' GET WELL WISHES Get well wishes to Rev. Wm.
