WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 23, 1984, PAGE 3 Tories govern by poil, Evans teils local Liberals There were only 90 of tbem present, but after last week's annual meeting, tbe Durham West Liberal Association believes that it bas a chance to defeat Conservative MPP George Ashe during the next provin- cial election. Tbe Grits were told by Brian Evans, their can- didate in tbe next elec- tion, tbat it is time for a change not only in the riding but in the provin- ce as well. In an ail out attack on tbe Tory government of Premier Bill Davis, the Witby lawyer said that "the citizens of this province are fed up with politics as usual. " .After 41 years, he said that Tories have become "the party of privilege, patronage and pols. " He said that while many young people remain jobless, many farmers go bankrupt, and the province's lakes and forests continue to be polluted the gover- nument bas invested $650 million in Suncor, bas allowed Ontario Hydro to build up a debt load of $20 billion, bas allowed doctors to extrablil and .ýWasted $1 billion on land banking "for cities tbat wil neyer be built. " Evans also noted that Ontario is stil impor- ting skilled labor from Car lot' struck by fire other countries. "This provincial government has done nothing in 30 years to develop skill aod ap- prenticeship programs in Ontaro," he said ad- ding that there are 3,000 jobs in the province that are un- filled because young people don't have the skills to take them. "And after 4 years of government by polil, what do we have now? Hundreds of tbousands of unemployed men and women with no job skills and no prospects for the future," Evans added saying that this is the resuit of an education system that was un- prepared to deal with the needs of the future and couldn't give young people the skills tbey need. "This Tory gover- nment's record is disgraceful," he said. "And as we enter a new third wave of high tecb development there are no signs on the horizon that tbings have cbanged. Instead of substan- ce, we get slogans, In- stead of dialogue, we get confrontation. Instead of jobs, we get cut backs and rigbt wing rhetoric. " Evans told the party faitbful that the number one priority of a Liberal government would be skiil and apprentîcesbip programs. For 41 years the Tories have buxnbled along from six rnonth polI to six month poli. "Well, it's future shock time now . ..and we can 111 afford politics as usual." Evans also pledged that a Liberal gover- ornent will dlean up the environment, no matter what it takes. He polo- ted out that a recent study by Environmeot Canada showed that the Niagara River basin is being contaminated by a large variety of man- made chemicals. "Our drinking water is in danger. Our lakes and forests are in danger. They are dying and yet It is clear right wing conservatives do not love the land," he said, "The Mulroney Tories have already cut millions from essential environmental pro- grams. Ronald Reagan turns bis back on acid rain and the four million Ontario residents that drink from Lake On- tario." A Liberal gover- ninent, he continued, to address this issue. "If it takes 1,000 workers and $100 million to stop this pollution, lets do it," Evans said. "Our children will not under- stand if we do nothing less."1 Another cause to be taken up by a future Liberal goverrnment is women's rigbts. "Unbelieveably, in 1984, Ontario does not have equal pay for work of equal value.
