According to Rick Taylor, sales manager of Marigold Lincoln Mercury which is located at the corner of Dundas and Anderson Sts., the auction is being held primarily for two reasons. "First off ail, they've had enough bad publicîty," he says. The second reason le more personal. 'II believe in the hospital," Taylor sys adding that a daughter off a close friend developed serious heart probleme when she was 3 years old and required open heart surgery. She is now 5 yeare old and living a ful and normal life. For the last few days, Taylor has been ap- proaching businesses throughout the Whitby- Oshawa area seeking donations. To date, ha has secured gift car- tificates from a few local restaurants, car- tificates for rust proofing and other auto body jobs, a stereo as well as a $100 gift cer- tificate from a local supermarket chain. Anothar supermarket chain has agreed to supply all the supplies for a barbeque Taylor plans to hold in conjun- ction with the Satur- day's auction. Hamburgs, hot dogs and soft drinks will be sold at a nominal price with ail the proceede going to the hospital . GEORGE ASHE, MPP (PC -Durham West) Minister of Goverument Services Ontario The Ontario Centre for Microelectronics was established to facilitate the adoption of microelec- tronics by Ontario industry to improve their com- petitiveness, and to be a focal point for design ser- vices, technical expertise, advice, and information on mieroelectronics. The centre has been in operation for over two years, and 1 would like to take this opportunity to bring you up to date on the progress off this initiative. The Ontario Centre for Microelectronics has three major streams of activity: It is a design centre. The major activity of the technical department is the design of microchips. In addition to chip design, engineers perform microelectronics based circuit design and product development. It is a training centre. Courses and seminars are presented by the Centre across the province. They range from an Overview of Microelectronics seminar aimed at the layman with littie or no technical understanding to more detailed technical courses including an Introduction to Electronics Manufacturing and an Introduction to Microcomn- puters and Microprocessors. As well, the centre has developed a number of unique courses including: Microprocessor Hardware, Software and Inter- facing; Pascal, ADA and C in Microelectronic Design; Advanced Microprocessor System Design; and Gate Arrays: An Approach to Semicustom In- tegrated Circuit Design. It is an information centre. Through the use off national and international data bases, Centre staff can provide information on the latest in microelec- tronic developments and applications. The Ontario Centre for Microelectronics le well on its way to meeting their objective of providing On- tario companies with the assistance they require in order to produce more competitive products, which resuits in new and retrained jobs and an incraased wealth for the provincial economy. Ministry off Transportation & Communications Note: It's interesting to note that the contract for a noise barrier on Hwy. 401 (Brock St. W. for 1.4 km north sida of 401) has been awarded to Lorlea Steels Limited of Bramalea ($436,827). This noise barrier project on Hwy. 401 in Whitby is part of the Ministry of Transportation & Communications continuing ef- forts to reduce the effect of highway traffic noise on adjacent residential developments.
