WHITBY FREE PRESS. WEDNESDAY. FEBRUARY 6, 1985 ,PAGE 7 Palmerston Public Sehool to get a proper library Palmerston Public Sehool is finally getting a proper library. The Durham Board of Education bas promised the school library facilities by Sep- tember, 1985 or earlier if possible. A portable classoom will be provided, at an approximate cost of $30,000, allowing a classroomn to be conver- ted into a library. Palmerston Public School, located on Palmnerston Ave., is on the board's priority listing for building im- provements. The portable classroom arrangement is only temporary until fundîng is received from the provincial gover- nment to enlarge the school. At the moment, students have limited access to library facilities but the roomn is also used as a staff Ilouage, as a French language instruction room and for five other purposes. Other library facilities are distributed throughout the school. Reference facilities are located in the hall and recently bought reference books are stili in the boxes because space is not available to display them. The Whit- by Public Library, which makes regular visits also has to leave the books in boxes.- Concerned parents fear that their children are not receiving adequate instruction in the use of a library or general interest in reading. Parents, anxious that the students receive good education have supported the school through the home and school association. Last year, through various fund raising events, the parents collected over $4,000 for the school. The money went towards the purchase of school supplies, books and a computer. Parents are also asking the board for an additional $3,500 to buy more books for the school. The inadequate facilities are the resuit of a large increase in enrolment.
