In fact, I'm ad- dicted to eating. (Anyone who knows my girtb would have proof positive of that.) I like restaurants where one can go, sit down'and eat a good meal. 'm not mucb of one for video screens and games and loud rock music blarring out to disrupt the pleasures of my palate. One place in Witby I really likeis the Coach House at 939 Dundas St. W. General manager Paul Pappas is rigbt on wben be says bis place is a quiet, reserved restaurant with pleasant friendly, ser- vice. Tbe Coach House is a place to eat. it boasts a quiet, intimate dining room with sof t, gentle music filling the background to add just the atmosphere to make a meal an enjoyable ex- perience. I went to the Coach House for lunch last Tbursday and let me tell you, it was one of the finest meals I've had in Durham Region for a long time. Wben you sit down, your waitress brings a bowl of olives and pickles and small plate of sausages warming over a candle. A delight- ful way to start a mneal. It is a delight- fui mixture of sour cream, mayonaise, garlic and otber spices that don't prevent the salad from having a lit- tle crunch. The side order of fresh bot French or garlic bread is also worth saving room for. For lunch, I enjoyed the filet mignon off the dinner menu. It camne exactly as ordered - medium rare _ and was so tender and juicy it practically feIl apart under the knife. It was one of the best pieces of steak I've ever eaten. it came witb a choice of baked or fried potatoes. I had French fries which were light, crispy and not at al greasy. The menu at the Coach House is a simple one but guaranteed to please everyone. Dining there is a great experience. Local theatre ticket prices ned air travel upside down. Discounlt selling revolutionized retailiflg. Two weeks ago Larry Solway and Nuala Fit- zGerald of Whitby's Marigold Dinner Playhouse faced the traditional "January Blues." They stole a,*' page from the discoune merchandisers. Theatres have used "two-fers" and cash-off coupons before -- but neyer bas there been a "No Frills' sale. Like the discounters they rewrote ail the price tags. Stripping away ail the extras like appetizers and desserts, reducing the entree to a one- choice item with potato, veggies, bread and but- ter, plus unreserved "rush" theatre seats, the price was turnbled from $21.95 per person ($24.95 Saturdays) to, only $24.95 per couple ($27.95 Saturdays.) The phones didn't stop ringing once word got around that the owners had gone a bit mad'. But they both insist it can work. It will go on "working" as long as people join the rush for tickets. The discount "deal" depends for sur- vival on volume sales. From $17.95 weekdays and Sundays ($1895 Fridays, $19.95 Satur- days) patrons have a ful choice menu: a- petizers, soup or salad, choice of entrees, beverages plus reserved theatre seats. AND there is a new a la carte menu with items at ex- tra cost to regular patrons only. Solway and Fit- zGerald are ready to celebrate the idea. If patrons want the value, corne and get it.
