At a press conference held last week, Rein Verrydt, president of the B.W.M.H.A., said that lits group is now ralsing money to send the team to the tour- nament which will be two ide trips to play exhibition games in Leningrad, U.S.S.R. and Mayor Bob Attersley is seen here drawing the winning ticket in the Brooklin-Whitby Minor Hockey Association's recent gas bar-be-ue draw to raise money for the Whitby Minor Bant.am team's trip to Finland to play in the 1985 World Cup Bantamn Tournament later this year. The bar-be-ue was donated by the local office of Consumera Gas. Looking on as Attersley makes the draw are: Simon Ashdown, captain of the Peacock-Crouch Canucks (as the teamn will be known) and Don Ferguson, district sales manager of Consumers Gas. The team will be coached by Mike Primeau and Larry Windover. "Both coaches," Verrydt said, "(are) Whitby residents, have a number of years in coaching minor hockey representative teamns in our association." Most of the players on the team have been together since the teamn was formed six years ago as an 'Atom' squad. And since that time, Verrydt noted, they have piled Up some im- pressive achievements. "These achievements have inluded - 'AA' league championships in novice (1980); Atom (1981); Ail Ontario major peewee finalists (1984); and recently winners of the 1985 Mintr Bantam «AA' In- ternational Silver Stick Tournament at Port Huron, Michigan," he said. #'In six hockey seasons, the team has a record of over 20 major hockey tournament championships." During the conference Max Hunt, president of the Whitby Kiwanis Club presented the association with a cheque for $3,000 to help defray the team's ex- penses. Dave Beatty, operations manager of McDonald Restaurants presented the team with a cheque for $2,500. Verrydt said that over the course of the next few months, the team will be holding a number of fund raising events to earn the rest of the money needed. Mayor Bob Attersley, himself a former world and Olympic champion- ship hockey player, was also on hand to give the boys a few words of en- couragement. This will "be an ex- perience that you'Il neyer forget," he told the boys adding that they will be able to meet people from other coun- tries "on a level where politics are not in- volved." "Remember, you're representing not only the Town of Whitby but the Dominion of canada, so do it proudly," Attersley concluded.
