The report, altbough expressing the board's desire to cooperate with the secondary school board, also outlines several areas of concern in implementation. Primarily the Durham Board finds "it imperative that any ministry decision to fund Roman Catholic higb schools would not negatively affect the chance assistance for desperately needed elementary accom- modation." It is also a possibility, according to Bruce Mather, director of education, that the board may consider leasing space to the separate schools. The. separate school implementation report indicates that-separate schools have few vocational and VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The Auberge Shelter for abused wornen and their children is in need of volunteers to assist with their day' and evening support programs. Orientation and training sessions will be provided. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer is asked to caîl 728-7313. and would be prepared to use public scbool facilities. The public board also has surplus high school space which could be leased out however, the details have not yet been discussed. The expected impact of students changing systems is difficuit to calculate until registration figures in the faîl are entered. However, the Durham Board estimates that it will retain aIl Roman Catholic students presently in the public school system and will return 25 per cent of the Roman Catholic studen- ts. The calculation is based on those students AnILrn< FUND WORKING WITH PHYSICALLY ISABLEO AOIJLTS decide to enter separate school, a quarter of which the board expects tokeep. Whitby Trustee Ian Brown, vice-chairman of the Durham board expressed concern at the vagueness of the separate school im- plementation plan. The admissions of non-Catholic students as quoted in the separate school implementation, is basically the main- tenance of the status- quo," said Brown, "lit legisiation." Browfl is sceptical that the Roman Ca tholic separate schools will provide equal access for non-Catholic students. Brown also was con- cerned about the protec- tion of redundant teachers in the public school system; whether they could mnove to the separate systemn and remain affiliated with the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Fecleration (OSSTF).
