WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, MARCLI 20.,1985, PAGE 7 No one else is willing to buy it, he claims.... Liberals would, scrap GO-ALRT technology:o Evans manpoer an tota ago now -t9res-n-mone If the Liberals form the provincial gover- nment after the next election, the GO Transit commuter rail service is in for some big changes, according to the party's candidate in Durham West. Brian Evans says that the f irst thing to be scrapped would be the Advanced Light Rail system currently being constructed by the On- tarîo Urban Transit says, "The GO-ALRT track hasn't been laid yet." Evans believes that it is ridiculous that com- muter rail users "will have to disembark at Pickering and then take the Disneyland train from there to Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa." He also suggests that the provincial gover- nment is using this project to prop up U.T.D.C., which he and without doing a comparative cost analysis. "And they're doing it for the sole purpose of propping up U.T.D.C.," he added. The candidate noted that one of the reasons for setting up U.T.D.C. was to stimulate a new transit industry in On- tario. "But instead, U.T.D.C. bas become a monolithic parasite, absorbing millions of dollars in public money on highly suspect projects and technologies," Evans maintains. "And it bas failed to stimulate a new transit industry in On- tario." He pointed out that U.T.D.C. technology for the new Scarborough Rapid Transit System was to have cost $100 million. Estimates now place that amount at $200 million. U.T.D.C., he added, was selected by the City of Detroit for its new transit system la 1981. Four years later, U.T.D.C. bas yet to deliver a single vehicle and the opening date of that system bas been postponed. Evans also pointed out that the Crown Cor- poration lost bids for projects in Sacremento, California, Singapore and London, England. The advanced light rail system is bogged down with problems in- cluding "poor design, intensive maintenance requirements, poor per- formance and shor- tcomings ln terms of capacity, noise levels, power consumption,"- he saîd. becoming another bot- tomless pit of gover- nment spending, it's becoming a mini- Ontario Hydro," Evans said adding for this reason, the Liberals would sell it to private industry and spend the money being given to it on social programs. However, he stressed that neither he nor the party is against the ex- tension of the commuter rail service. "l'm totally in favor of the extension of the commuter train service, I'm just opposed to the technology they propose to implement it," Evans said adding that the ex- tension should have taken place 10 years But he did say that U.T.D.C. is just another example of the waste of the current Progressive Conservative gover- 11 . . .. is an example of a province that is wildly out of con- trol in terms of its spen- ding priorities," Evans says. 'lTbey go socialist on the mega-projects so0 left for basic social programs. "They spend billions on these state ownership projects but they cut millions on essential social programs."' He notes that if the $12 billion Darlington nuclear generating station was scrapped "it would build a lot of Durham Centres." Se AWAe OLBX - nUNI 913TU T . W Developmeilt Cor- poration (U.T.D.C.) for GO Transit between its present terminus in Pickering and Oshawa. The 34-year old Whit- by lawyer points out that since the track bas yet to be laid, the Liberals would simply have standard rails laid down to permit the current rail cars to use it. "There is still time to use the proper technology," Evans described as a "mini- Ontarlo Hydro". "The province is flogging a train system on the T.T.C. and GO Transit that nobody else wants to buy," Evans says, "They implemen- ted this project without going to public tender 1ajmrpaqj Ch, ysler's recoveiyis camplete.W Mue we aur sucUUss lu yuur suppuis.
