The Church Speaks Sponsored by the WHITBY MINISTERIAL ASSOCIATION Gethsema ne! By THE REV. KEITH A. ELFORD Pastor Wbtby Free Methodist Church Gethsemane I It is the place where Jesus' 'first crucifixion" took place. But he was only crucified once you reply. Indeed you are right. He was only nailed to the cross once, but what transpired in the Garden of Gethsemane prior to the crucifixion was perhaps as significant as painful as the actual execution on Golgotha - the site of His death. The gospel accounts tell us that he entered the garden with il disciples. Eight of these were asked to sit and wait while Jesus and his three closest friends, Peter, James and John went in a littie fur- ther. Alone with them, Jesus went ail to pieces. If you study the original meanings of Mark's words for Jesus' distress, you'll find they describe intense feelings of panic and deep inner anguish. Luke tells us that Jesus' anguish was so intense that blood vessels in bis face broke and blood began to ooze through the pores in his skin. Why was Jesus sa beside himself? t may have been the knowledge that he was going to say his final gobdbyes shortly to these dear friends. t may have been is concern about what would happen ta them when they saw what happened to him. t may have been bis own anticipation of the cross. (Isaiah's prophecy and Pslam 22 vividly describe what the Suffering Messiah would look like when the crucifixion was over.) I would submit that there was something deeper. t spilîs out when he prays, 'Take this cup from me." The cup was the symbol of the fury of God's anger against ail Sn. t was the bitter medicine that had ta be drunk if forgiveness was going ta corne ta the world. Jesus knew that in a few short hours God was going to turn is back on him, place ail his anger against the sin of mankind in that cup and then pour it out upon him while he was suffering in agony an the cross. The distress of Gethsemane, the crucifixion that happened there, was the crucifixion of the will. When Jesus was able to surrender himself ta fulfili God's ultimate purposes, the pantic left, the anguish subsided and he walked ta meet is betrayer. Without this first curcifixion, there would have been no death on Calvary. Withaut Calvary, there would have been no resurrectian. Do you realize where that would leave us?
