In total the additional health care services, in- cluding the renovatian at the Bowmanville Hospital, will cost ap- proximately $6 million. Up ta 93 additional nur- sing home beds plus the conversion of 30 more at Hillsdale Manor and Fairview Lodge plus additional funding for the chranic care program at the Bowmanville Hospital will bring an estimated additional $2 million a year in heslth services ta the Region. "We are delighted by the gavernment's com- mitment ta improve services in aur region" said Tom Cowan, District Health Council chairman from Kendal. "The recommendation for the renovetions ta the Bowmanville Hospital has been a top priority of the Council for several years. " The district health council also recommen- ded the conversion of unused residential cere beds in homes for the eged ta nursing home care through a major study on services for seniors completed in 1983. " We are not sure right now exactly where the additional nursing home beds will be located" said Cowan. «I have asked our staff ta review aur bed needs, and aur standing committee on long term care headed by Dr. Joan Atkinson from Ajax, council on the areas most pressured for ad- ditional beds," he con- tinued. The district health council has previously recommended beds for the Uxbridge/Scugog area and Oshawa, Whit- by and Bowmanville. Based on the Council's recommendations aw- ards have been made ta the Daheim Nursing Home in Uxbridge (20), Sunnycrest Nursing Home in Whitby (40) and Marwood Nursing Home in Bowmanville (10) in addition ta the conversions of beds et Hillsdale Manar (16) in Oshawa and Fairview Lodge (14) in Whitby. In total, Durham Region bias ap- proximately 1,500 nur- sing home beds in 13 nursing homes. A recent review of the Sunnydale Children's Nursing Home in Sun- derland indicated a potentiel need for some beds for geriatric care in that community ta, supplement those available in Cannington and Beaverton.
