I WIIITBY FRE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, 1985, PAGE 9 Twinniing visit wil be held June 14- 16 The 17th annual twîn- nîng exehange visit will begfin June 14 when 20 residents of the Mon- treal suburb of Longueuil arrive in Whitby. They will actually arrive in Oshawa. at the Holiday Inn because Whitby doesn't have a hotel facility large enaugh ta accommodate them. According ta Reg. Caun. Tam Edwards, chairman af the Whitby tWnning cammittee, the weekenid af June 14, 15 and 16 will be packed with avents for the visitors and their local hasts. Whitby Town Council will hast a welcomning recaption in the "Durham Raam" of the, Blaor St. E. hotel at 3:30 p.m. ta be followed by a brief ceremony in tha Whitby Municipal Building at 6 p.m. to re- affirmn the twinning vows. The town will (han host a dinner and dance at the Thunderbird Golf and Country Club at 6:45 p.m. with entertainment being provided by organist Irwin Smith and Joanne Drumm- Alexander. The following day, the visitars and their hoats will take a field trip to the Village of Ste. Marie and the Martyrs' Shrina in Midland and have dinnar at the Delawan- na Inn. Sunday will be kicked off with an acumenical church service at Ail Saints' Anglican Chur- ch, beginning at 10 a.m. ta be lad by the Rav. Rod Barlow. A final civic reception will be held at the Municipal Building at 12:45 p.m. before the Longueuil delegation raturns home later in the day. .Edwards is a fervent supporter of the twin- ning and notes that the project got its start in 1967 when the Quebec F'ederation of Mayors and Reeves their ver- sion of the Association of Municipalities of On- tario) took up the con- cept as their Centennial project. "Thay sought to establish a better relationship with English speaking comn- munities," Edwards said, "with the abject of strengthening national ties. " Whitby became in- volved in the twinning project when the late Father Lea Austin, then rector of the St. John's the Evangelist Church, and former Longueuil Mayor Marcel Rabidas greeted a group of local Rover Scouts, led by Peter Award winner Benny LaHaye, who had retraced the journeys of the Voyageurs from Midland to Longueuil as their Centennial project. The following year, 1968, the Longueuil City Council invited Whitby to be its twinning par- tner. Edwards said Whitby council an- thusiastically endorsed the idea and the first twinning visit was held the fallowing year. For the first twe years, each community hosted the other a few weeks apart but in 1971 it was decided ta alter- nate the visits an an an- nual basis. This year, it is Whit- by's turn ta host Longueuil. Edwards believes that the twinning exehanges have been more than successful. "I am convinced that as a resuit of thase ex- changes, the people of Quebec have corne to know more about us then they did prior to the exchange," he said, "and we certainly know more about then. " The caunillor also notes that Longueuil was once a bastion of the Quebec separtist movement, an attitute ha beliaves has changed partly because of its association with Whit- by1.'I'm convinced that partly as a resuit of these exehanges, despite the fact Longueuil has attracted a high number of separ- tists, they voted against separation" in the referendum held a couple of yaars ago, Edwards said. "lIt was very inspiring ta hear the elected of- ficiais say that thay ara Canadians first and Quebecois second," ha said, "And thay made those statements ta us whan terroriat activitias were taking place." Edwards also wants ta encourage as many local people as possible to participate in this weakend. Tickets for the friday and Saturday ac- tivities are $20 each and the Sunday civic lun- cheon tickets are available for $10. Anyone wishing ta pur- chase tickets and receive a twinning weekand agenda should eall town administrator Bill Wallace at 668-5803. Ha also wants to urge Whitby rasidants par- ticipating ta use whatevar French they possess. "Thay are really warmad and irnprassed whan we speak ta tham in French," Edwards said, "Even if yau don't know much, they raally appreciate itif you try.
