Libe ration honored The flag of the Netherlands flew over the Whitby Municipal Building over the weekend in honor of the liberation of that country by the Canadian Army 40 years ago this month. Members of the local Dutch community turned out to witness the flag raising by Mayor Bob Attersley. In the photo above Whitby residents and Dutch-Canadians Liz Wersma (front left) and Victor Veninga (front right) are seen here in front of the Dutch flag with Mayor Bob Attersley (rear left) and town administrator Bill Wallace (rear right). Both Wiersma and Veninga, who is the custodian of the Whitl:, Municipal Building, lived in the north part of Holland during the Second World War. Veninga was 9 years old at the time and the only vivid memory he says he has is being given chocolate bars by Canadian soldiers as they entered his home town of Friesland. Wiersma remembers the smoke generated by the battle as the Ger- mans retreated from the Canadians. Last Friday was, for her, a very emotional day. "It aIl cornes back to us," she said. "We have great respect for the Canadians. " Wiersma came to Canada in 1950. Eight of her nine children were born in this country. "Canada is our home now," she says proudly.
