Ss Stewart picks up 1,9 17 more votes for NDP locally By MARC VINCENT Free Press Staff Don Stewart, the NDP candidate for Durham West, looked tired and disappointed after the results on Tliursday niglit confirmed his third place in the riding. Stewart, a 34-year-old teacher and Whitby resident, arrived at his Jobless figure drops in April, 1( The number of clients unemployed and registered for work at tlie Canada Em- ploymnent Centres in Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa for the month of April totalled 13,414 which compares to 14,403 during March and 16,452 during April, 1984. Hall in Ajax at about 10:30 p.m. with his wife, Kathy and campaign manager, Janet Broder-Miller af- ter visiting the other contenders. He apologized to the remaining party faithful that lie could not bring any more raw votes to the party and thanked tliem for their support. Stewart picked up 8,495 votes, 1,917 more than the '81 election while winning 10 poils in the riding. He said that althougli disappointed witli the third place finish lie did enjoy the public ap- pearances. Stewart told reporters afterwards that being Geoff Risons campaign manager, the federal NDP candidate in the last election, had made it difficuit to get out and meet the people earlier in the summer. He also thought the traditional format of campaigning also made it difficuit to get out and reach the people. 'II got te touch as many people in three polis a day... so I could only toucli about 30 per- cent of the area unless you drive yourself like a madman," he said. Although Stewart was aware it was unlikely lie could beat incumbent George Ashe he had hoped for a second place in the riding. He said that Brian Evans (the Liberal candidate) had benefited from leader David Peterson's strong campaign. "After a slow start Peterson picked Up while Bob Rae was steadily strcng," lie said. Stewart also said that the Liberals practically ran on an NDP platform of stress on issues like social services and the environment. 0f the future Stewart believed that "Miller is going to have to walk on egg shelîs. " Stewart's immediate plans were to go up to a secluded resort where they had a pool and a sauna. "My knees feel like water cress," lie said. It was only after a break that he would consider running again. Stewart returned to teaching history at 0'Neil Collegiate in Oshawa on Monday. 1 SUPPLIER 1 SALES REP 'l CALL DELIVEIIT WIEN YOU WANT IT/IOTATIONS WIIEN YOU NEED T4EM/PBOMPT ATTENTION PHNE68-16 0 LETEERHEAO S SNAP SETS S INVENTORY CAREtS 0 CIEOUES j " ENVELOPES e CONTINUOUS POqMS S SHIPPING f1856 e PRICE LISIS " BUSINESS FORMS 0 BUSINESS PORMS 0 LABELS 0 BROCHURES " INVOICES 0 ANNOUNCEMENTS 0 NEWSLETTERS 9 RAISED PINTING I " CATLOENAS 0 ICKETS 0S SCRh AS 0GULNSTAPINOII CATENARUSS 0ICKETS 0SNCRATC FOS SGOLNSTATPIN Tl " BOOKBININ6 *0 KOI3R WOI< * CkEATIVE DESIGN * PHOTOGRAPI4U A COMPLETE PRINTINfI SERVICE FOR THE PURCHASING AGENT OR BU VER FAST EFFICIENT SERVICE - PICK-UP &.
