JUNE 17 No calis reported before 8 a.m. Report from Q ueen 's Park By THE HON. GEORGE ASHE, MPP (PC - Durham West> The real opposition to ail governments in a free society is the media. "Unofficial" though they may be, their voice has always been louder, their audience larger and their effeet on government policies much greater than any of Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition over the years. Should David Peterson be called upon to form a government at Queen's Park this week, he, along with Bob Pae, will effectively end the media honeymoon they have both been enjoying over the past months. Oh, it won't happen overnight. The media will want to be "fair" and give the new kids on the block a chance. Many of the mist.akes and the stumbling in the early stages of the Liberal-NDP "coalition" will be attributed to inexperience. Those who were in opposition will find a whole new world of critics when the roles switch from asking questions to an- swerîng them. And, the media will be the toughest critics of ail. The change in media approach can be seen even in these early stages. NDP inspired polîcies are already being looked at wit.h some degree of skep- ticism, if not outright cynicism. David Peterson - the man who would be Premier - is seeing headlines and stories not quite in keeping with what he might like to think of as a "positive press".- Weil, to paraphrase the barker, "he ain't seen nothing yet." Even when seen as a critic, by the critics, David Peterson did not do particularly well. His perfor- mance in the role of key subject of the critics can be nothing less than disaster. And, strange bedfellow, Bob Rae, will be seen as mismanaging the bilge pump on their short ill-fated voyage, just as sure as he wili be depicted as the architect of their un- seaworthy navy. AIR CONDITIONIED COMFORT ALL SEATS FREE -Sponsored by Whitby Christian Assembly- Uà i - 8 It will be interesting to see how those wbo cried "arrogance" from the Liberal benches wil handle the new titie of "arrogant". They'd better learn quick, because it goes with the territory. I don't believe there is any such thing as an "ob- jective media". We are ail human beings, and as such, face the frailities of bias and prejudice inherent in the species. Neither our job nor our responsibilities cen totally wash that away. Whether it be the political arena or the pleying field, the gamne will be seen and analyzed from many per- spectives - most, subjective. If and when the Lieutenant-Governor calîs upon the Liberals to form a government in Ontario, fifty- two members of the Progressive Conservative par- ty wiil take their seats in opposition. They will be joined - albeit unofficially - by some 60 members of the Queen's Park Press Gallery. It will be the first time in 42-years Conservative members have been in opposition. There will be no change of roles for the media , but the Liberals are due for a rude awakening. It'll be ewful, just awful. 1 wouldn't miss it for a minute. r ----- -------- THIS WEEK! ____Ail1Sîzes à Styles L ---LIMIT ONE COUPON PER CUSTOMER - - M I THE CORPORATION 0F TH ETOWN OF WH ITBY N THE MATTER 0F THE ONTARIO HERITAGE ACT, R.S.O. 1980, c. 337 AND IN THE MATTER 0F THE LANDS AND PREMISES AT THE FOLLOWING MUNICIPAL ADDRESS IN THE PROVINCE 0F ONTARIO NOTICE 0F INTENT TO DESIGNATE TAKE NOTICE that the Councli of the Corporation of the Town of Whltby Intenda to designate the property, including lands and buildings, at the foiiowing municipal address as property of historic or architectural value or Interest under Part IV ot the Ontario Heritage Act, R.S.O. 1980, c. 337. One of the churchas ministers, Rev. Joseph E. Sanderson, waes a prin- cipal supporter ln the establishment of the On- tario Ladies Coilege (now Trafalgar Castie Schooi) n 1874. In 1876, the church was ciosed when th1e Methodits compieted their new, much larger Tabernacle (now St. Marks United Church>. Architectural The former Methodiat Church was originaliy built n a simple Greek Revival style. It was converted to residentiai purposes in 1877. At that time, many late-Victorian details were added such as bay wvin- dows, carved brackets and decorative wooden porches. The juxtaposition of the two styles has produced a unique and interesting architecturai composite.
