PAGE 16, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 16, 1985, WHITBY FREE PRESS Blood donors don't risk AIDS, ciniec chairman says By MARGARET HORTON A racant article on the front page of the Globe and Mail had as a headline "Red Cros blood stili pure?" it was referring to a bass of faith soma peopla migbt hava in the Red Cross Typewvriter REN4TALSI a/sa SALES & SERVICE GOLDEN GATE, fera a wide selection of 107 Brock Street South, Canadian dishes. The rafrigeration failure was definitaly an unfortunate occurrence but one thing it did point out, as many other such occurrences also show, ia that people come for- ward when they are needed. The supplies at the blood bank were built back up and increasad by 900 units within 20 hours. Here in Whitby, we witnessad our beat clinic ever with a total of 433 units of blood baing donatad. People knew they wara neaded and cama out to donate. It would ba great if this kind of feeling could be generated for every clinic. It le true that several cases of AIDS in Canada can possibly ba linkad to blood transfusions. However, when you consider that more than eight million tran- sfusions have bean given in Canada since the disease appaared here, the chances of acquiring AIDS through the blood transfusing procesa is very amaîl. There la no risk at ail to the voluntary donor giving is blood. Ail the equipment that la used in donating blood la used once and once oniy. The risk lies with the patient receiving blood. In August, the Red Cross hopas to start testing for the presence of the HTLV III an- tlbody. The HTLV virus la beloved to cause AIDS. Any blood that tests positive wili definitely ba discardad. This testing is a atap in the right direction to help restora the in- tagrity of the Red Cross blood giving syatem. However, I find it bard to believe that anyone would turn down ablood transfusion if his ife depanded on it. Af- ter ail, we take riaka avary day of our lives whan wa ait bahind the whaal of our car or wban we tep into an airplane. We must keap our faith in the Canadian Red Croas biood programn.
