The Canada Day theme, "Salute to Youth" honors International Youth Year. Celebrations throughout communities across Canada reflected the spirit, optimism and pride which we share together as Canadians. A special Canada Day Program, sponsored by the federal governmnent, featured a Canada Day Youth Award for presentation at community ceremonies to honor young Canadians. The awards were presented by communlty groups at July lat festivities to a youths who have made a special contribution to their commuity. Youtbful optimism has been fundamental in the founding and shaping of Canada as a nation. Youth i Canada have a history of accomplishinents and contributions in sports, the performing arts, science and business, to name a few. Canada Day's "Salute to Youth" is another com- mitment on the part of the Progressive Conser- vative government of Canada to encourage and stimulate Canada's young people to realize their full potential as individuals and as equal and con- tributing partners in our society as they face the challenges of tomorrow. The Mulroney government proudiy joins Canadians in celebrating the 11eth Birthday of this great nation and in saluting its future, which lies in the strength andleadership of Canadian Youth. "'These amounts are considered very good in view that this infor- mation is fromn the first month of the program and that the par- ticipation rates are on the rise," the director said. Kuwahara told coun- cil that the number of households i the Michael Blvd. area par- ticipating in W.R.A.P. has jumped from 206 on April 30 to 440 on June il, The rate has jumped from 18 to 37 per cent during that seven week period. "This general in- crease in the par- ticipation is viewed as a good sign and indicated that both the recognition of the recyling program and the general knowledge of the en- vironmental advan- tages of recycling are growing," Kuwahara said adding that during W.RA.P.'s first six weeks approximately 55 per cent of al households in the pilot project are participated at least once. The public works department is also studying the possibility of obtaining collectors to be used by the owners in the pilot area. "These containers should increase par- ticipation rates and would allow easier iden- tification of recycables at the curbside," Kuwahara said. The director will also be analysing the finan- cial aspects of the report which is expected to be submitted to coun- cil after the summer recess. "This report will outline the costs of the actual collections, the savings recognized by the town and the sale of recycable materials, and the diversion of material that tipping fees at the landfiil site would normally have been paid on."
