STANLEY ISHERWOOD Rector St. John's Anglican Church This is already proving to be an unusual summer at the lsherwood household. The congregation at St. John's decided that this was toi be the year to do some major work at the rectory, our home. First the. basement was to be finished and then the urea for- maidehyde foamn insulation in the rest of the house had to go. Great decisions, both of themn, but not wîthout their inconvenience for the resident family. Already the basement work is almost finished and it is clear that we will soon be enjoying some new and comfortabie living space. To prepare for that work ail our belongings stored In the basement had to be rioved here and there, and now, as we get ready for the removal of the offending insulation, we are starting to pack ail our books and prepare most of our other belongings for remnoval and storage. Certainly a lot of extra work. But we are discovering an unexpected bonus. In addition to a new living area and improved insulation our family is enjoying a giant sumnmer dlean out. Things which we have been coliecting ever since we were married and before are going ... going ... gone. Ail sorts of things; some we have hung on to "Just in case..." (we should have another child, renew an old hobby, etc.), others we kept because they have some real value, though not for us, and stili more we had simply forgotten that we had. Most went straight into the garbage, some found lbs way to other homes via a garage sale, and the rest will probably be given to someone who can use it. And for us? We have more free space for living and more room to enjoy the things which we reaily want to keep. In the midst of ail this it occurs to me that many of us could use just such a dlean out in our lives. We are carrying around so much extra "stuff " that we don't have space for living or room to enjoy the things worth keeping. And that stuff î výery much like the stuff which my wife and 1 have just disposèd, of. There are the barriers which we put up between ourseives and others "Just in case" we should be- hurt again as we once were. There are worn out images (gentie Jesus meek and mild?) stiil of some ivalue but not to a maturing Christian. And there are those stereotypes (about people of another denomination?) which we had forgotten were.stiil there. The first Important step in deaiing with such cramping baggage is to recognize that it bs there - no smail accompiishment. The second is to, get rid of It. Sometinies something major, like our home renovation program, provides just the opportunity. îA famiiy crisis, a change of churches, retirement, can ail provide the opportuflity for a dlean out, and upsetting times can thus be changed into creative ones. We ail need room in which to, live. Let's not crowd 1it with things which should have been left behind long ago! To raise money for band trip... Anderson students holding car wash 22 Ritson Rd.
