Free Press Staff With the openlng of Durham Goldsmithing, last Friday, Whitby has gained an old world craf t, and an old world craftsman. Jos Reinen earned his diplomna in gold- smithing in Amsterdam in 1974. He studied art gold which included designing, crafting, and knowledge of materials. Many people would like their own custom- designed jewellery but are afraid it will be ex- pensive. Not so, said Karen Reijnen, Jos, wife and business partner. "Our prices should be Iower because other stores or- der through a distributor, but here there is no middle man, so it should be less than other retailers. " Jos intends that most of the stock will be custom-designed items. in the back of the store he has manufacturlng equipment 50 that he can reproduce some designs. Karen sald they hope to allow some school classes in to see the whole process. Besides custom work, Jos will repair ail types o! jewellery (he has a one-hour repair service for ring sizing and chains.) He will do ap- praisals, and free in- spection and cleaning. Before immigrating in 1976, Jos had a jewellery store in Holland for two years. More recently hie has been doing repairs on a wholesale basis for other jewellers, such as the Cortesis chain in Cobourg and Port Hope area. During one year spent in Calgary he designed and made the logo for the Calgary Flames. Decorated tastefully in soft neutrals, the store at 210 Brock St. S. achieves an air of elegance with its an- tique jewellery display counters set on carved wooden legs, and its large safe of the samne era, printed with J.M. Hicks, Jeweller. At his store's opening Jos wanted to do something very special and unique to his business, 50 he designed, made, and presented Mayor Bob Attersley with an 18K round gold pin. In the background there aie houses; in the foreground following the curved lines of the pin 'Whitby' is speiled out in raised letters. Under that it reads, 'a nice place to live.' Jos and Karen have been here for two years. To invest in their own business they must believe Whitby is a nice place to live.
