PAGE 2, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 21, 1985, WIIITBY-SREE PRESS Meeting minutes tell the story.... Drumm proves council rejected Decom proposai Witby Town Council did, indeed, reject a proposai by Decom Medicai Waste Tran- sportation Systems Inc. to build a bio-medical waste transfer station on Sunray St., Coun. Joe Drumm says. In a wrltten statement reieased iast week, the fiery East Ward representative disputed commenta made by Decom iegal counsel Ivan Flaschner in the Aug. 7 edition of the Whitby Free Press. In that story, Flascbner maintaîned that councii did not reject b is firm's proposai to develop a 12,000 square foot bio- medicai waste transfer station in tbe Con- surners' Dr. /Hopkins St. industriai park. He noted tbat council merely. stated tbat an Environmentai Assesa- ment Hearing must be heid first. However, Drummn says that simply isn't true. "'Notliing could be fur- ther from tbe trutb," be said adding tbat tbe administrative commit- tee recommended on June 17 that council voice no objection to tbe proposai provided Decom met the town's building requirements. Tbe committee also recommended tbat no bearing be requested. But tbat, Drumrn maintained was not tbe motion adopted by council. Pointing to tbe minutes of counci's meeting of July 24, Drumm noted tbat the carried on a recorded vote of 5 to 2: "That the request for approval of a medical waste transfer station by Decom Medical Waste Transportation Systems Inc. be denied; and, "Tbat the Ministry of tbe Environment and tbe Regionai Healtb Services Department be Drumm, who bas been opposed to the plan from the beginning, said that this motion firmly states council's position. "There is absoiuteiY no doubt council does not want Decom in Whitby," be said. "Mr. Fiascbner can dream in tecbnicoior and con- tinue to orbit Jupiter, the fact is Whitby Town CounCJi is on recoru where it stands on this matter." Decom is currentiy preparing its appeal of councils decision. According to officiais of the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, the Environmentai Aasess- ment Board will hoid hearings into the proposai sometime early tbis fali.
