Game one was against Etobîcoke and saw Whitby jump out to a quick 5-0 lead, and with the steady goaltending of Dan McWhirter coast to a 13-9 victory. Peterborough were the victims of game two, Whitby trounced them 14-7 playing an excellent defensive game with Chris Fowlie in net. The final game was played against Bram- pton, the midgets in- spired once again by the goaltending displayed great team effort and took the provincial title 16-11. Being number one in the province of Ontario is the most fitting end to the season for a team that bas consistently won every tournament they played in. Goalscorers for Whit- by were Jeff McComb with il goals, Steve Dyment with 9 goals, Wayne Cornish netted 8, Rick Dyment and Dan McComb added 4 each, Rob Paddick had 3, Dean Vanderinde had 2 goals and a single was added by Steve Nolan. The Checkers Variety bantams played their nationals in Kitchener, where they placed four- th overaîl in Canada. Throughout the season, the bantams have played undefeated in their zone games, won their "A" provincials, and had an excellent season of lacrosse. The team entered the nationals with their best effort against soine heavy opposition. The first game was a 6-6 tie with Owen Sound. Whitby downed Mississauga 8-5 in gaine two. In the third gaine Whitby lost 7-9 to -Six Nations, the team that won the nationals. Gamne four was a repeat of the first with a9-9 tie with Hunltsville. From that point on Whitby faltered, losing to Brampton 2-9, and playing for the bronze medal against Surrey, B.C. which ended in a 4- 1519Ss. Goalscorers for the tournament were Todd Wilson with 12 goals, Jeff Whittle and Adamn Foote netted 7 eacb, Chris Tucker and Jay Lee added 3 each, Mark Ainsworth scored 2 arfd Andrew Vanderinde and Gregg Rennie flnlshed off the scoring with one goal each. EDITOR'S NOTE: Dorothy Mebta ls the pobliclty directer of the Whltby Garrard Road Minor Lacrosse Associationl. Wiltake to the ice in Sept. '86.... New junior A club formed loeatty The Whitby Lawmen, the junior A tier-two team that made its brief appearance on the ice last year, will not be back. And nor will the new tier-two teamn that it was rumoured would replace the Lawmen this faîl. The organizers of the proposed teamn have decided 10 hold off another year before forming a team. 'We tried to get the club to go this year, but with the season starting September 15, there just wasn't time," said for- mer Lawmen manager Lionel Ingleton. Ingleton bold repor- ters Monday that his group would go ahead and purchase a fran- chise this faîl, so that everythîng would be in place for Sept. 1986. He stressed that the new team was a "totally separate venture from the Lawmen," and ad- ded that ail former Lawmen players would be free agents Sept. 1. The organizers are anxious to gel the new team started on better footing than the Lawmen last year. "With the Lawmen, il was a situation of today we're on, tomorrow we're not. Money was coming in and being pulled out coninuaîly throughout the season. We were always on a shoe string," explained Fay Drew, one of the people most active in getting the new club together. The new teain will not be put together by out- side people, explained Ingleton. "It'll be a community teamn with local boys put f irst, not a team with players pur- chased at high prices." Ingleton says four in- vestors fromn the Ajax- Pickering area have ex- pressed keen interest in purchasing the club. The team organizers, Ingleton and others, will meet with investors in the upcoming weeks. As there are currently several junior A fran- chises for sale, Ingleton is optimistic that one can be picked up for less than $18,000. The cost for the entire starl-up year - including the cost of the franchise, new equipment and any pur- chase of players - is estimated at $80.000 to $100,000. Former Lawmen managers and coaching assistants who hope 10 be involved in the new team will be working this year with minor hockey teams in the area. 'We're covering ail minor hockey in winter," said Ingleton, " 4so we should be in good shape for recruiting new players at the end of the season. " If the new teain materializes, organizers have been told they can book ice turne for prac- lices and games in Whitby. This will make it easier for local boys to play, and will help develop local talent says Ingleton. In addition to having the chance to be picked up by NHL or hockey scouts, tier-two players are likely can- didates for sports scholarships at American universities. "There wasn't enough community in- volvernent with the Lawmen," said Ingleton, who was born and played hockey in Brooklin himself. "You can't always take from the community, you've got to give back to it ton."
