"A Group of Seven Murray's theme ini talk to photo club ByGEORGEBLAKE Joan Murray, directar of the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, will give an illustrated lecture of The Group Of Seven And The Canadian Landscape at the Whitby Public Library next Monday (Sept. 23) at 7:30 p. m. This is the first of the guest speaker series sponsored by the Witby Photagraphic Club this season. Guests and new members are welcomed. A busy persan, Joan Murray bas lectured ex- tensively across Canada. Her friends of interest include Vic- tarian Canadian Art, Painters Eleven, Tom Thomsom and Contem- porary Canadian Art, She is equally at home as curator or as juror at juried shows across the province. A contributing editor ta Canadian Art, she also publishes regularly in numerous journals and magazines. She is author of the recent book, The Best 0f The Group of Seven, publisbed by Hurtig in 1984. Located at the Whitby Public Library, this three week, six session course will be held from 10 ta 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, beginning Oct. 1. A $20 registration fee is payable in advance. What is new, however, is the translation of these methods into a format that can be understood by very young children. Through gaming, modeling and imaging, the children are taught ta use their stomach muscles and diaphragm ta breath mare easily durîng an asthma episade. Parents and children also learn how ta reduce the anxiety and tension that often contribute ta the severity of an attack. Program co- ordinator, Rana Gupta, stresses that these methods are not inten- ded ta replace correct medication, which is vital for the continuing maintenance of a severe asthmatic. What can be achieved is a reduction in the number and severity of attacks. During the program, children and rnoms meet such friends as "«Clippy Dol)" (a car- dboard paperclip dol used ta teach floppy relaxation mavements) and "Hot Botts" (a hat water bottle inside a sof t cloth covering).
