PAGE 8, WEDNESDAY, SEPT EMBER 25, 1985, WHITBY FREE PRESS Protecting the in- vestment in your new car or truck -- making it last, maintaining its ap- pearance and value -- has become increasing important. The result is a growing emphasis on car protection services, and rustproofing is an effective way to prolong the life of your new vehicle and enhance its resale value. For those of you thinking about rust- proofing as a means of protecting this invest- ment, there are a few items to consider. Across the country, millions of tons of road salt help drivers through the winter. The j amount of sait used has more than tripled since 1955. In addition, air pollutants mix with moisture in the at- mosphere and create acid rain that helps corrode automobiles. Obviously, rust is a major problem. It's not only ugly, but it's also very expensive, eating away at the wallet as well as the metal. US. studies have shown that rust was costing American con- sumers an estimated $7.5 billion annually, and the price continues to escalate as new-car costs increase. This staggering figure does not include the cost of accidents caused by rust-damaged parts or overall structural breakdown. So, there is a com- pelling argument in favour of rustproofing. However, there are equally disturbing problems associated with the process. As the demand for rustproofing services has increased, there has been a corresponding increase in consumer complaints about the quality of rustproofing provided by some new car dealers, indepen- dent retailers and fran- chises of national and international rust- proofing companies. To help you in selec- ting the most effective rustproofing, and to assist you in judging the quality of a rustproofing application and the workmanship involved, Jim Vanderwater, Whitby, offers the following tips: •Do not shop price alone. A high or low Arl 'Arl price does not necessarily guarantee a good rustproofing job. •Carefully check the rustproofer's warranty. Make sure the warranty clearly spells out the rustproofer's respon- sibilities and what is required of you. Check to see if the warranty covers the whole vehicle or just areas sprayed with sealant. eDeal with a reputable, well-known company that will honor its warranty even if you move from the area or sell the rustproofed vehicle. Also, make sure the sealant manufac- turer, as well as the dealer, warranties materials used. •Although the actual application is hard to judge, check the num- ber of "plugs" that fi holes drilled in the ap- plication process. The number of "plugs" will give you some idea of the hidden areas covered. Look in the .door drains, under fen- ders and inside trunk areas for coverage. *Check the overall cleanliness of the job. It will give you a good idea of how carefully the dealer does his work. •Make note of the amount of time it takes for the rustproofer to complete the job. You should have to give up your car for a full working day in order to get a good job. •Take time to ask questions about the ap- plication technique and material used, .,and check the rustproofer's specifications for your particular make and model. Does the rust- proofer have extensive specifications? This will give you a feeling for the rustproofer's knowledge of your particular car. *Be careful with rust- proofing terminology.
