Bowman With the end of the regular season rapidly approaching, the Wit- by Warriors continue to Batte r upe The action was fast furious last weekend as the Whitby Minor Basebail Association hosted the annual Whitby-Oshawa Midget Basebaîl Tournament. In the photo above, a member of the Witby Dunedin Construction squad takes his turn in the batters' box at Iroquois Park. Unfortunately, the complete results of the tournament were flot available at press time. Hlopefully, they will be reported next week. Free Press Staff Photo Sholtes' four shut-outs lead to Concord Tournament Mfter 19 games, the Minto Cup champions are boasting a 17-2 record and 34 points having scored 337 goals while allowing only 154. In addition to being four points ahead of second place st. Catherines, they also have a game in hand whicb should strengthen their position even fur- ther. Recent wins over both Elora and st. Catherines also added to their position. On JuIy 3, Whitby handed Elora a 20-12 loss while downing St. Catherines 20-6 two days later. Ross Tabor is now holding f ifth spot in the divisional scoring race. In 17 appearances, he bas scored 25 goals and contributed 42 assists for a total of 67 points. The Warriors last scheduled .regular season outing is this Friday when they host St. Catherines at the Iroquois Park Arena at 8 P.M. Meanwhile, the Brooklin Redmen are six points beind Peter- borough in the O.L.A.'s major junior 'A' division. After 13 games, the Red.men have earned 22 points on il wins and two losses. However, they have two games in hand over the league leaders. On July 2, tbey turned in a convincing 30-6 win over Scarborough. The Redmen also boast tbree teamn mem- bers in their divisional scoring race. Gil Nieuwendyk is currently the division's leading goalscorer. In 13 outings, be has earned 72 points on 36 goals and 36 assista. Right behind him with 71 points is John Jordon who bas scored 15 goals while contributing 56 points in bis 13 ap- pearances. Holding down the number five slot is John Fusco witb 57 points and 19 goals and 38 assists in 13 games. The Redmen travel to Scarborougb tonight and to Owen Sound Saturday nigbt. They will stay on the road this time travelling to Peterborough for a game Monday night. They return home to the Luther Vipond Memorial Arena next Tuesday night when they take on Owen Sound at 8:30 p.m. The Redmens last scheduled regular season game is July 25 wben tbey travel to St. Catherines. Witby were Paul Siciliano with three goals, Sean Edwards who contributed two and Mike Brillinger who ad- ded one more. In the second game, they faced a side from Vestal, N.Y. wbo they brusbed aside 4-O0. Scoring for Witby were Sookdeo and Siciliano. In the semi-finals Wbîtby took on Oshawa Italia. Frank Stefanowicz opened the scoring for Whitby in the first haîf. While they didn't find the net a second ime that period tbey kept up the pressure with shots bit- ting the posts and crossbar. In the second haîf, Siciliano increased Whitby's lead but with five minutes left to play Oshawa turned on the heat and tyed the mat- ch, forcing an overtime period. Despite intense pressure on the Italia squad, Whitby couldn't victory score and the game en- ded in a draw. Each team then took turns at penalty kicks but Whit- by goalie Mark Sholtes stopped them aIl and Stairways, scoring on ail theirs, advanced to the finals against West Rouge. Both teams were tired but with a little extra energy they created a great game to watch, as the play was up and down the field with.each team having great scoring chances. In fact, there was no scoring until the second half when Dwayne Allen connected on a penalty shot from inside West Rouge's penal1ty area. It was the only marker of the game and Whitby won botb the match and the tour- nament. Goalie Mark Sholtes produced four shut-outs and Sciliano was Whit- by's top goaîscorer.
