Free Press Staff Photo The joys of beingr a new father CONT'D FROM PG. 5 hand and squeezed and watched our daughter emerge into the world, suspended head-down for the longest moment in bistory. Then she - Erin Kathleen - took ber first lungful and cried. Friends have attempted to describe the emotions of the moment before me and failed. Sbould 1 try to do so for you, 1, too, would fail. But followed then a strange twist. The mother, baving delivered without intervention, now required emergency repairs. She was whisked off to the delivery room (the 'birthing' room is flot equip- ped for operations> and this new father found bîm- self alone witb an infant minutes old. Which is how I came to be pacing for the birtb of this child: not alone in a smoke-filled lounge, but together with my newest family member. I held her, talked to her, while she gazed up with ber soon- to-be-brown eyes, holding eye contact with me al the while. 1 told ber about ber brothers and sisters, about grandparents and aunts and uncles, and about the confused trouble world she was entering, which is full of joys nevertheless. Family-centred childbirth, in whatever form, may be the sanest idea in medicine in years. It bas changed father from the bumbiing buffoon into a sharing partner. In our Lamaze class, one father showed distinct lack of interest in the first few sessions. He admit- ted he had been dragged there. This couples baby girl was born the same day as was Erin Kathleen. I saw the father shortly after. He had stayed with bis wife the wbole time, had followed the Lamaze instructions, the coaching, the help, tbrough a long and difficult delîvery. 'Could you imagine, " he said to me, bis face alive with young-father pride, "going through that alone? " It doesn't end witb delivery. Now fathers - and brothers and sisters of any age - are allowed to visit from first feeding to last, to hold baby, to change diapers (if brave enough). 1 wish it bad been so 21 years ago.
