Youîgest-eve r candidate twins Vol. 15, No. 46 Wtdnesday, November 13, 1985 28 Pages It's -'Yes' to Mayor Bob one more t ime 1..4 ndGat- or a Mayor Bob Attersley swept into a third term last night as he trounced his only challenger, in- surance consultant Lynda Buffett, in an election that climaxed an often bitter cam- paign. And while the race for Whitby's two regional council seats began as more of a seesaw affair, the two incumbents - Gerry Emm and Tom Edwards - walked away with their seats in- tact. The strong challenge. mounted by former mayor Jim Gar- tshore had fallen short of the mark. But there was littie drama in the races for town council. Ail three incumbents running - West ward Counilior Joe Bugelli was ac- claimed - were re- elected. North ward Councillor Ross Batten faced a strong challenge early in the race from Rein Verrydt but Batten neyer looked back from the 24-15 lead he held af- ter the first poil. The Mayor pulled ahead of Buffett early in the counting, establisbing a pattern that held throughout the night. By the first pol count at 8:40 p.m., At- tersley had clocked in with 37 votes to Buffett's four. He neyer looked back. The second poll a few minutes later brought the count to 82 for Atter- sley and 18 for Buffett whiie the third poili in- creased the spread to 114 to 24. Mfter 26 polis, it seemed ail but wrapped up with the Mayor holding a commanding 772 to 335 lead. By 10 p.m. Attersley had jum- ped to 1,600 compared to- Buffett's total of 640. In the race for the two regional seats, Emm took an eariy lead with 29 votes, while Gar- tshore was second at 21 and Edwards third at 16. Emm jumped to 64 in the second poili and 77 in the third while Gar- tshore slipped behind bis two opponents with 60 votes by the third poil. Edward's comeback was the most dramatic, his tally shooting up to 78 votes s0 that he pulled ahead of the pack by the time the third poil resuits came in at about 9 p.M. In spite of Gartshore's" strong showing -- and hard campaigning -- the former mayor seemed to be slipping beyond reach of bis goal by the 26th poil. Incumnbents- Edwards and Emm had pulled ahead with 679 and 603 respectively to Gartsbore's 503. After 44 polis --by about 10 p.m. . the spread bad increased even more with Edwar- ds clocking in at 1,323, followed by Emm with 1,036. Early in the evening it became evident there'd be no new faces from the wards sitting on town council. The North ward -- which recorded a bîgh voter turnout in the last local elections - looked as if it wouid host a reai race after the first poli resuits. Ross Batten took a 24- 15 lead against his op- ponent Rein Verrydt. It was stili close by the 26th poil witb Batten ahead by 54-46 but by the 44th he had taken a commanding 182 to 96. lead. The East ward race S FI. lPA(G L 23 In a stunning electoral feat, a 22year-old political novice took a seat as trustee on the Durham Board of Education edging out her two feilow trustees in the popular vote. Pat Bowman, a private art teacher and recent graduate of the Durham public school system, led incumbents Ian Brown and John Buchanan in the race for the tbree seats. The enthusiastic Bowman pinned her success on strong com- munication skills and added: "As 1 look at it, you don't get a second chance to make a first impression."- Brown and Buchanan ran on their record af ter five years service witb the boards. Ted Shiner, in his second bld for a trustee seat, ran close behind the third place Buchanan. in fifth place was Jerry Moskaluk, manager of a data processing company. Mike Knell, former community editor of the Free Press placed sixth with Larry Kinnear trailing. In the separate school races, a husband and wife team led the poils. Pat Bowvman Judi Qîdman won as separate school trustee on the public board while her husband Tom took one of the four seats on the Catholic school board. The other three seats were taken by Ed Finan, Catharine Thn- ney and Tia Woodcroft. Ail the trustees elec- ted are newcomers to the board replacing the incumnbents who retired this year. While Woodcroft is new to Whitby, she bas served for five years as a separate school trustee in Oshawa, Defeated in the 13- candidate race were Roger Brideau, Jan Devries, Kari Filo, Jerry Holatko, Sophia King, Richard Marr, Colin Kerry McDonald, Brian Joseph McKinnon and Teri Osier. - cIvIcw ELECTION '85 Unofficial results ai press trne MAYOR ATTERSLEY, Bob ........... 7,527 (E) BUFFETT, Lynda ...........2,988 REGIONAL COUNCIL Two To Be Elected EDWARDS, Tom ....... 6,460 (E) EMM, Gerry ......... 6,115 (E) GARTSHORE, Jim ...... 4,734 Mayor Bob Attcrslcy NORTH WARD BATTEN, Ross .............. 916 (E) VERRYDT, Rein............. 450 WEST WARD BUGELLI, Joe........ acclaimed CENTRE WARD BRUNELLE, Marcel .......... 1,609 (E) HUGEL, Vera ................ 893 EAST WARD DRUMM, Joe................ 2,245 (E) FOX, Dennîs.....t..... 1,340 PUBLIC SCHOOL TRUSTEE TO THE DURHAM BOARD 0F EDUCATION Three To Be Elected ANDERSON, Tom............ 2,669 BOWMANf, Patricia ........... 3,284 (E) BROWN, Ian ................ 3,065 (E) BUCHANAN.
