The Church Speaks Sponsored by the WHITBY MINISTERIAL. ASSOCIATION By The REV. RON FISHER Pastor Hebron Christian Reformed Church This week we remnembered, for last Monday was Remembrance Day. And so we ask some questions. What do slaves have to sing about? Or captives? Or exiles? It is truly a wonder that a rich musical heritage was born out of the days of black slavery in North Anierica. But no great songs came out o! the conentration camps of World War Il or the prisoner-of-war camps of the Far-East. The captive Israelites ini Babylon could compose only songs of mourning like Psalm 137: "By the waters of Babylon, there we sat down and wept ... How shallwe sing the Lord's song in a forelgn land?" What else is there for displaced people to sing about, living wthln the shadow of that threatening city, listening to the boasts of its King Nebuchad- nezzar, 'Behold the great Babylon I have bult"? Babylon was the very opposite of Jerusalem. Jerusalem was the city o! God, Babylon was the city of man with aillhs anti-gods. StUU, Israel's captivity was also the work o! the Lord. God used even Babylon to demonstrate His plan of salvation. He made the light to shine even In the darkness. For there in Babylon, God's people were cured of their idolatries. There, homesick for the city of God, the longing lyrics of Psalm 137 were born: ..If I forget you, O Jerusalemn, let my right hand witherl1 Let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth, If 1 do not remember you, If I do not see Jerusalem above my ighest joyl1" Few of us know from experience the agonies of a concentration or relocation camp. We thank God for sparing us such ordeals. We are freel Yet our songs of praise are terrible absent in our lives. Yes, more than we care to admit, our lives. are enslaved to the dlsheartening spirits of oûr times. Lot our. prayer be, as we remember, "Lord, liberate us!1 Set us f ree by Your mlighty Word and Holy Spirit, so that our whole lives may praise Your name, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN!" 1 CANADA MUSIC WEEK The local branch of the Ontario Registered Music Teachers Association (ORMTA) has scheduled Use foilowing events for Canada Music Week.
