Cail 725-8967 with items for this column WHITBY WOMEN'S INSTITUTE Whitby Women's Institute held their October meeting at the home of Mrs. Amelia Pringle, 320 Dunlop St. E. The topic of the meeting was "Resolutions" and the convenor was Mrs. Atkins. A feature of this meeting was a visit by local district president Mrs. Ava Thompson, who béought valuable information on the subject of resolutions and offered many suggestions on the work of the branch, district and area divisions of the women's institute. Mrs. Campbell thanked Mrs. Thompson for her informative and interesting talk. A discussion period followed. Refreshments were ser- ved by the hostess Mrs. Pringle, assisted by Mrs. Grace Carr. The November meeting will be held Nov. 27 at the home of Mrs. R.A. Smith, 909 Bayview Ave. in Whitby. The topic will be "Public Relations". Visitors welcome. EXTRA REGIONAL SEAT This is the second part of the series of "how to fill the third regional seat". To fill this seat by appoin- tment or election is the burning question. It must be remembered that the position will be for a three year period, not just a few weeks. If our new council should decide to appoint a representative to the region, is it fair to confine that appointment to one of four persons already representing their in- dividual wards? Our outgoing council, with the ex- ception of Gerry Emm and Tom Edwards, appear to have decided it will be a closed shop. However, some may be having second thoughts. Now I read that Joe Bugelli has offered to take on the regional seat as Well as his own local seat, and without pay no less! Come on Joe, you are an astute politician, and usually fair and well informed, but you must know that you can't run for two elected positions, let alone hold two at the same time, or do we change the rules to fit the occassion? Who knows what schemes our council will come up with next? They may even suggest they fill the school board seats with local councillors. To be democratic, invite ten- ders, in the form of nomination papers, without limiting the candidates to elected representatives. The people of Whitby deserve the opportunity of electing a third regional councillor. If our new council should choose to appoint someone to fill the vacancy, surely anyone interested in the position should have the opportunity to apply. County Singers working their way to Expo 86 Whitby's County Town Singers are trying to work their way to Vancouver in time to sing at the 1986 World Exhibition. The local group has been invited to perform several times on the Expo site and are also scheduling concerts in the surrounding area. But Vancouver's a long way off and it all costs money. Members are involved in many projects to help raise the cash to offset tran- sportation and accom- modation costs. For November, cheese is the featured sale item, in many delicious flavors made by the Black River Cheese Company of Pic- ton. Orders are being taken for one pound, two and three and a half, and five pound blocks. Ask any choir member. Delivery date is set for early December, plenty of time for the holiday season. Other fundraising events include - craft shows, raffles and selling plastic wrap. But practice time is still being squeezed in and this year's show of Christmas music will be well worth waiting for. Lorie Easton-Flynn, the choir's dynamic direc- tor and winner of several Kiwanis Festivals prizes last spring, has selected music that will show off the choir's musical skills and versatility. Candidates bow out of Buffet's Bowl-a-thon Lynda Buffett's bowl- a-thon last Saturday was not an over- whelming success. The mayoral candidate in- vited all of Whitby's municipal election can- didates to participate, but only six showed up. The event's hostess blamed the number of no-shows on last minute campaigning. The day wasn't helped by United Way's refusai to have anything to do with fundraiser, osten- sibly being held in the agency's honor. Accor- ding to United Way president Mike Ambler, the bowl-a-thon - three days before the civic election - was too political for his taste. Buffett blames her opponent for United Way's reluctance to co- sponsor the event. 'I wanted the United Way to take all the credit for this, not me, but Bob At- tersley didn't like the idea and pressured the United Way to back out." Although Buffett would have liked to see more candidates on the lanes, she said she was "quite happy" with the turnout she got. The bowfers, which included two hydro- electric commission contenders, a school board trustee, and cen- tre ward council can- didate Vera Hugel, raised $200 for United Way. 1 SUPPLIER-1 SALES REP-1 CALL DELIVERY WHEN YOU WANT ITIOUOTATIONS WHEN YOU NEED THEMIPROMPT ATTENTION 1 0 g PH N 68-96. •LETTERHEAD *ENVELOPES -BUSINESS FORMS *INVOICES -CATALOGUES •CALENDARS *BOOKBINDING *SNAP SETS •CONTINUOUS FORMS -BUSINESS FORMS *ANNOUNCEMENTS •TICKETS -CHEQUES *PRICE LISTS -BROCHURES *RAISED PRINTING -INSTANT PRINTING •GOLD STAMPING •PHOTOGRA PHY *BINDERS *COLOR WORK *INVENTORY CARDS *SHIPPING TAGS -LABELS •NEWSLETTERS *NCR FORMS -SCRATCH PADS *CREATIVE DESIGN A COMPLETE PRINTING SERVICE FOR THE PURCHASING AGENT OR BUYER FAST EFFICIENT SERVICE.PICK.UP & DELIVERY.COPY DESIGN & PREPARATION PHONE 683-1968 c B M rIL f 218 HARWOOD AVE..
