GEORGE ASHE, MPP (PC -DurhamnWest) Recently, Ontario Progressive Conservatives have been pressing for tougher penalties to curb drinking and driving. Ontaria's Attorney-General, Ian Scott, has responded favourably by establishing a one-year automatic suspension for a first drinking and driving conviction, with a two-year suspension for a second conviction. This toughening of the penalties provides for suspensions that are four times longer than those currently on the law books. They should go a long way to help stop a person who has been drinking from getting behind the wheel. Unfortunately, the good that these tough penalties could achieve, will be undercut by the Liberal government's determination to allow beer and dornestic wine to be sold at corner grocery stores. Although the Liberals are toughening the law, they are proposing to increase access ta alcohol. This contradictory approach will not satisfy the many cornmunity groups that have sprung up) to fight drinking and driving. 1Alcohol stili plays a contributory role in haîf of al fatal traffic accidents and thirty percent of ail per- sonal injury accidents. Last year, more than 550 people were killed and 27,000 injured in accidents in Ontario where alcohol was a factor. Ontario has been a leadeFin the movement to cut drinking and driving. Thanks to educational programs started by previous Attorneys-General, deaths and injuries related to drinking and driving have gradually decreased. Recently an Ontario Court of Appeal decision ex- tended the penalties given an individual by a lower court for drinking and driving. The public wants action to curb drinking and driving. While the new penalties introduced by the Attorney-General are a step in the right direction, the Liberal government must clear up the con- tradictions in its approach to the distribution of alcohol. They will soon find out that while governing you can't have it both ways the way they could while in opposition. CONT'D FROM PG.6 want yau, they know where to find you. Finally, nobody works for you, they work with you."t Everybody laughed appreciatively. Muriel continued: "I arn going to miss this place," she said. "I can't say I wnn't. " But she showed that she wasn't one to dwell on nostalgia when she admitted later that she was happy ta be retiring and looked forward ta, this challenging new phase of her life. First things first, however. When Muriel had finished her speech, roorn and threw out a characteristic arnile. Her eyes fell on a table piled up with fresh shrirnp and canapes and fruit. "Now let's eat!" she exclaimed. "She'll be deeply rissed," a Fairview staffer adxnitted.
