I have caught a glimpse of that glory fromn which He came when the grace of His forgiveness cancels the guilt of a man's con- science and assures him that he is free. When a broken life is mended and the darkness is driven froru a sou], and the dayspring from on high lights the life with glory - then 1 realize whyHecamel God, who created our lives for glory, could not bear to see us become children of sorrow and darkness, so He came bringing the glory with Hiru, and Christmuas can be a light with the beauty of a new nior- ning if we will expose This eternal light is the oniy sane hope for mankind as we face the increasing problems of trying to co-exist with people and nations of other viewpoints, ideologies and religions. Christ, the light is in the world but the world does not recognize Hlm. He cornes to us bearing gifla of love, mercy, forgiveness and salvation, but we in our haughtiness and pride have fashioned for our- selves other Gods. We prefer toys of car- nage and the experience of confrontation i We are like excited children on Christmas Day who can hardly wait to tear the paper from this year's gifla - worldwide con- frontation, exploitation and fragmentation! We turn our backs on the Te Churc Spek By the REV. RG. FISHIER 'Give n Christian Reformed Church Gieus this day our daily bread." That prayer touches life at every point. The prophet Zechariah speaks to Israel with these words also. Israel was back home after the cap- tivity, looking ahead to the comning of the promised Messiah. With boid strokes now the prophet paints a picture of spiritual renewal sweepîng the coun- tryside when he states: "On that day there shaîl be inscrîbed on the belîs of the horses, 'Holy to the Lord' ... and every pot in Jerusalemn and Judah shall be sacred to the Lord of hosts." Zechariah 14:20,21 Look, there are farmers, walking along behind their horse drawn ploughs, breaking new ground. The harness bells are inscribed with the words, 'Holy unto the Lord." In other words, even cultivating the earth, the source of our daily bread, is service of the Lord for the good of His people. Zechariah comes even dloser to home. Not only the vessels in the temple, but also every pan in the cupboard must be dedicated to loving service! Just try to imagine the sweeping change in our life styles if every toolbox and labour contract, every eating utensil and dishwasher were inscribed with the words, "Holy unto the Lord." We might then be able to take a long step forward in finding meaningful work for aIl people, and in breaking the deadening monotony of meaningless jobs. Then even coffee breaks might become little sabbaths,, rest periods into the Lord, pauses that really refresh! In our daily meals, we might then discover a new readiness to slip an extra leaf into the table to share our food with the lonely and hungry of the world, those both close to us and farther away. 'Holy unto the Lord." What does that mean for us in this season when we remember that God gave so very much -- His only dear Son?! Throughout more than 3,500 years Of recorded biblical history many have not discovered the truth that God loves them, that God, since the days of Adam and Eve, has been calling out, "where are you? " But we, as the nations of the world, with the exception of brief epochs of history, have continued to oc- cupy our rainds and our handa with ungodly thoughts and wicked toys. We send our children to school to learn history, but too often ignore one of the oldest and most accurate books of history. We wish themn to becorne acquainted with the masterpieces of literature. Are there any which excel the literature in the Bible? Theodore Roosevelt said, "to educate a man in mmnd and not in morals is to educate a menace to society". The warden of large eastern penitentiary declared there are in hiE prison enough highl3 trained intellects, anc enough college graduates to suppl3 professors for a firsI class American univerý sity.
