Na histaricai society will survive if it is divided inta twa fac- tions; ane aiming ta preserve the histary of the cammunity as a whole, the ther cancer- ned anly with preser- ving their own personai family histary. I beieve this is the roat cause of many af the prabiems facing the future of Lynde House. I may of- fend same people by when it was built it was probabiy a very magnificent home. Taday it is a sows ear. Its state of disrepair and its locatian is not can- dusive ta it creating any great deal of interest among the public as a whoie. Ail the maney availabie in the far- seeable future will neyer be enough ta, make a siik purse af it. It has aften been in- timated that it was built in 1812, but that has neyer been praven, and the Whitby Histaricai Society must decide if they are ta be a graup wha are dedicated ta the preservatian of the histary af aur cam- munity as a whaie, or a famiiy campact whase sale interest is the preservatian af one family name, and ane famiiy's pride. If it is ta be the latter of the two it shauid be done with private funds, not gavernment grants and municipal taxes. Tom Daucette, Whitby, Ont. FROM PG. 2 Ontario Humane Society draw fram the operation. Needless ta say, this wiil mean that the ser- vices of the humane movement wili not be available in the area ta the same extent and that the future of the Society in the Regian is somnething that will have ta be decided. We feel sure you will be disappointed ta receive this infor- mation. If you wish ta canvey that disappain- tment ta the persans responsibie, may we suggest that yau get in touch with yaur local councîllor. To assist you we are enclosing a ist of the members of council of the three municipalities, tagether with their phone num- bers. Please do not blame the Society or aur staff in Whitby. To the con- trary, aur staff in Whit- by, under, the management of Inspec- tor Hue Coghill and the Shelter Supervisor, Mrs. Gloria Saraokanian, have al cone an excellent job an done an excellent job and have gone out af their way ta provide care and protection for animais in the regian. It is a pity that we should have ta lose staff that have been with us for many years, have been 50, committed ta the work of the organization and have dedicated themselves ta, providing the residents of the Region with a very high level of service. It is a pity that we shouid lose these valuable persan- nell in -this -way.- Hopefuiiy the municipalities wiil con- tinue ta empiay themn in some capacity in the future. if you are surprised at the fact that you are anly now being infor- med af the decision ta terminate aur services at the end of the year, let me tell yau that we actuaily advised the three municipaiities in June of aur intention ta terminate the pragramn at the end of September. We were asked by coun- cillor Ross Batten fram Whitby, who is chair- man af the Animal Con- trai Cammittee for the three municipalities, ta extend these services ta the end of December and we agreed ta da sa. In the intervening mon- ths, we have attempted ta negotiate a satisfac- tory solution ta the problem fit isn't dif- ficult , they merely have ta rnake the funds available) but the decisian was postponed by the municipal representatives because of the municipal elec- tians. The shelter an Thicksan Rd. was built by the society in 1964 ta replace the disgraceful and tatally inadequate pound operated at that timne by the municipality. For 20 years the Ontario Hurnane Society has served the community faithfully and well. We are sorry ta have ta remave aur services at this time and par- ticulariy because the only reason is that the municipalities are not prepared--ta give-us the- iunds necessary ta operate. Iranically, if the three municîpalities take over the operatian them- selves, they will un- daubtediy spend a great deal mare af the tax- payers' money than they are being asked ta spend by the saciety. And, af course, they can't duplicate the ser- vices.-that we of fer ta the cammunity. We wili keep yau in- formed af the develop- ments. Thank yau for yaur support. We hope you wiii cantinue ta sup- port the generai wark of the society. We wiil be expiaring ways of praviding humane ser- vices and, in particular, investigation of cruelty compiaints in the Durham Regian. The Ontario Humane Society.
