WIIITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY,DFCEMB3LR 18, 1985 PAGE 21 The Church Speaks .1rMFý6_Sponsored by the WHITBY MINISTERIAL ASSOCIATION By THE REV. STANLEY ISIIERWOOD St. John's Anglican Church My most recent article under the banner "The Church Speaks" engendered a little more response than is usually the case. One gentleman said that hé had read it, sbown it to three friends, and ail that they could understand was that 1 was angry. Others reacted in other ways, but one in particular was led to respond in writing. As a result in the rest of this article the Church speaks from the front line. A READER WRITES Rev. Isberwood's article in the Whitby Free Press, <Wednesday, Nov. 6), gave me food for thought. Specifically, what do others hear when 1 speak, or see in me as 1 go about my daily life? Do they hear and see the evidence of a vibrant believing Christian in action? Does an alive faith in God reflect itself in virtually ail 1 say and do? Or, am 1 one of those Christians (albeit, self- proclaimed) who take great pleasure in preaching to others but do not practice what is preached in their lives? If I am honest with myself I have to acknowledge that 1 stand somewhere in the middle. And yet, Jesus himself said, " ... because you are lukewarm, neither cold or hot, I will spew you out of my mouth." (Rev 'elations, chapter 3, verse 16). It is time for me, for one, to begin however falteringly, to take a stand for ail in which I profess belief. That is, to make a decision to allow what faith I have to be actualized in my everyday life. I arn convinced that ail spiritual growth begins with the decision to surrender self, to place one's trust wholly in God, and to move forward in absolute faitb that God is in control. A taîl order? True. But, then it doesn't have to be done ail at once. A begîning is necessary, but the rest can be done over a life time. 1Anyone cen do it, any time ... anywhere. The impor- tant thing is ta make the decision and be willing to work at it day by day. And as we begin to experience the fruits of spiritual growth, it is an incentive to trust in God more and more, day by day. -IL bas taken me a considerably long time to arrive at this particular viewpoint for myself. Experience tells me that people arrive at their own particular viewpoints in their own ime and in their own ways. .t's good la know that no one is ever really alone in this process ... it only feels that way sometimes. Time apart la important but so too is fellowship. And if you happen to be one of those individuals who feels "it is too late", or "I've tried and it's neyer worked for me" then let me tell you, V've been there, and it's neyer too late. God has someone in bis plan who is in a position Lo help you. It's only too late. when youstop reacbing out for help and understan- ding. I's always there for everyone when they are ready to receive it. God makes it so. Gratefully from a member of the Congregation of St. John's Anglican Cburch, Whitby.
