Evans told the Free Prass last week that the centre !ailed to im- plement a full and proper search for Verri Green, 65, who disap- peared on March 23. Evans aven went so far tri say that Green was dihcharged f rom the centre two days after his disappearance. Green's body was found on Aprdl 10 in a farmer's field on the Eighth Concession and Thornton Rd. N. in Oshawa. The coroner had establîshed his cause of death as ex- posure and pnemonia. Dennis Ferencz, the adniînistrator o! both Durbama Centre and D'Arcy House in Cobourg. told the Free Press last Friday that a complete search for Green was implemented as soon as it w;as discovered that ha was mitssng. "We did conduct a searcli for Mr. Green according to our search policy," he said, adding that lie was discliargeti ',until after wa were notified o! his death Green did have both grotind and town privileges and often leit the centre to travel to downtown Whitby to visit coffee shops, taverns and friends. said that prior to coming to Durham Cen- tre, Green was a patient at the Whitby Psychiatric Hospital and had frends from his days there who now live in group homes in down- "He often went down- town on hîs own," Ferencz said, "He has a history of going down- town and staying over- night." Green, he added, was a high functioning resident who did not require constant super- vision. 1 And if he was in difficultY he was quite capable of seeking help." Because Green was known to travel down- town alone, Ferencz said that the search for him started there. Tt wasn't until last Wednesday morning thatf the Durham Regional Police were able to formally identify the body as that et Vern Green, a 65-year old resident of the Whitby facility for the developmentally handicapped. His body was found on the ath Concession, one mile west of Simcoe St. N. Police do not know how he got there but speculated that be probably walked to that location. The cause of death was established as ex- posure and pnemonia. Coroner Dr. Peter Noble announced last week that no inquest will be held into his death.
